Try going to one of the box stores (Advance Auto, Auto Zone, O'Reilys) and have them put their code reader on your car (they do it for free). If their code reader works, then purchase one from them - should be about $80-$90 for a basic code reader.
I bought one of these cheap ELM327 devices for $9 and downloaded a great app for my Android called Torque Pro.
I hardly ever use my expensive scanner anymore since this does more. I leave the device in my glove box and scan for friends etc when people mention the check engine light is on. Provides real time data etc and MIL/emissions readiness etc.
