Importing a 430 from Europe

Gents,
I have a friend that has a full Novitec modded 430 sitting over in Switzerland and he is now living here in Minnesota. He has talked to several people but can't seem to find anyone who can import it for him. Apparently because it is european spec he would have to make a lot of modifications to the car to bring it to US standards and the costs are ridiculous. I know there was a lot of people importing cars like a Skyline back in the day but I'm no expert. I've heard after 15 years the cars can be brought in as collectors but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with getting around these issues and if they know of anyone that deals with importing that has had success.

Thanks for the help,

Andrew

I believe you'll find that the Federal requirements on glass, emissions, lights, ..... , are extremely expensive. Older cars, I think it's 25 years (and even then CA has issues) are different. I don't think any 430 makes sense for import.

Contact USDOT and they can give you a list of approved remanufacturers. Cars now are closer to world cars, so you have to ask on each specific car model how much it would cost.

It can be done but the cost is prohibitive.

Most of the places that do this type of thing have disappeared. Your best bet is probably to call Mike Sheehan and ask for his advise. He still helps move a lot of cars between Europe and the US.

Andrew- Last info I have on DOT and Dick Merritt, if he still works there. He can tell you everything you need to know and give you the names of the companies that still do compliance work. If Dick is gone, his successor should be able to give you the same information.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll be sure to pass it along as well as try and get some pictures from him for you all to enjoy. 707hp is hard to let sit over the pond while you are living here.

Is this car blue by chance?

Andrew360 03-24-2013 02:34 PM

Not it's red with black wheels and a two black stripes

I thought it might be the blue one that was running around London a couple of years ago on Swiss plates.
