456M GTA transmission problem

Drove my 99 about 15 miles to visit a friend; ran perfectly. After a 45 minute visit, I started the car and noticed white smoke from the left tailpipe. Shifted into reverse and backed 15 feet. Shifted into DRIVE and no engagement! Checked fluid level; correct on dipstick. Fluid was red with no burnt smell. Restarted several times with same problem: No DRIVE or 3rd gear engagement. The car will operate properly in reverse and 1st gear yet 2nd requires a increased RPM level to advance forward. Smoke does not smell like oil or transmission fluid. No puddles or leaks under body. Of course transmission red warning light is on dash. Drove the car without any problems 100 miles the day before. Any help would be appreciated.

Start with finding someone in your market? to pull the diagnostic codes from the transaxle. Short of that, the only other thing you could do would be to verify the fluid level, as outlined in the owner's manual. The white smoke from the exhaust may be indicative of head-gasket problem, which is not out of the realm on a 456.
