F 456 gt - sport mufflers

Hello friends,
i'm doing the back mufflers for a 456 GT for a dear friend, I based the project from the mufflers that I did for the 550-575, I used the same internal layout for use the bypass valve, I make a suitable inlet connection like the two tail pipes.
My friend likes the inclinated cut tail like the orginals, i make new tails of 80 mm OD with inside pipe od 63.5 mm OD.

For the valve drive, accordinfg with my friend, I will install opened valves without vacuum, we not add control cirquits, we only will connect the valves whit the air intake manifold by means of rubber pipe.
With this arrangement the valves will be closed during slow drive with less percent of throttle, and only when push full throttle they will be open.
Obviously is possible install a little box with electrical cirquit for the manual drive, this made from my brother (elctronic specialist).

Construction is in progress ..., follow some pictures ...

Best at all

Fabio

Fabio- You are going to have all the V12s that need help covered before too long.

Fabio- If it were me, I would have preferred the HGTC style tailpipes, just cut on an angle. Much easier to keep clean.

Ciao Gianni,

thanks,

I grind with sandpaper the bended edge, after that i gave the parts to a friend who have a specialized shop for polishing ....
Mterial is AISI 316 in order to have great corrosion resistance.

Caro Fabio,

If possible, could you please ask your friend at the specialized shop for the polishing steps? I suspect that your friend uses different sanding grits to start (probably with water), then polishing pastes with different grit, using rotary polishers.

The reason I ask is because my 456M GT exhaust tips have unpleasantly discoloured (bruto) and I would like to bring them back to a mirror finish. Knowing the correct detailed steps would certainly save me a lot of time experimenting.

Saluti,
Gianni

Ciao Fabio,

I found many YouTube videos for polishing stainless steel, but they were all for flat products. Then I got lucky and found a video for polishing tubular products, including exhaust tips...whoohoo!

I know what to do know.

Hello Guys,

some updates ...

I'm on the manufacturing of two muffler for the 456 of my friend, next saturday i will complete.

About bypass control, after speaking with him about his needs ..I thought to do the follow configuration:
- bypass normally opened
- rubber pipe between air intake manifold and th evaccuum actuator
- nothing switch

In this way the expected function is following:

- at start bypass are opnen and will be closed after approx half second
- during driving with less percentual of gas (30/40% to be verify) bypasses are closed due to the intake manifold vacuum.
- when gas pedal id pushed over 30/40% , the intake manifold vacuum go down and bypass will open ...

This at least in theory ....

My friend two weeks ago did a test, and result is was positive!
The pedal position that open the bypasses can be adjusted, by means of modification of the vacuum actuator spring preload, however my friend id happy, at least for his taste.

Him asked me also to indicate my "logo" on the tails... i'm contrary but he wanted ....

Following some pictures of the tails and of the muffler on the welding jig.

Fabio
