612: Getting the Yellow Out

I have an 07 612 HGTS; Grigio Sillverstone with Aluminum painted Calipers. It also came with the Yellow SF badges. And, being a US-Spec vehicle, you know about the lights.

After careful consideration, I decided to make 3 minor exterior changes to the car to make it look more consistent and what I believe to be a proper Ferrari:
1) Replaced side and rear lights with Dark Lights
2) Replace Yellow Wheel Center Caps with Ferrari factory carbon ones
3) Replace Yellow SF Shields with carbon ones

My reason for changes:
1) Tone down all the required US Spec lights - especially the front yellowish side lights
2) Yellow caps drown-out the aluminum calipers - carbon is better, albeit more expensive
3) Enough of the bright yellow SF Shields! They detract from the rest of the car and, IMO, are not appropriate; they are supposed to be on factory race cars - not production cars. I also feel those shields look ridiculous on GT cars. However, cars with factory shields have an indentation in the body; so, you cannot eliminate them - you have to replace them. The carbon shields seemed like the right compromise and go well with the body color.

My two previous Ferraris were a 328 GTS and 512 BBi Boxer - neither had shields.

I've attached before & after pics. Some of you may not agree, but I like the new look. I especially like the way the aluminum calipers now pop into view. The shop told me comments from other customers were positive.

Let me know your thoughts...

Very nice improvement! My 458 is also dark, and hence I also got the carbon shields. I love the look of them.

Each to his own - it would be a worse place if we all thought the same - but if it had been my car, I would have left well alone. No disrespect intended - just my opinion.

Best wishes, John

Smart moves!

May want to think about adding 599 Challenge wheels - handles better and fills the opening mirrors a Sessanta.

FYI - Subaru uses the same brakes so when it comes time at 1/3 the cost.

Id add 599 Challenge or HGTE wheels & Id have kept the wing shields yellow, for me the carbon shields are lost on your Silverstone beauty...

Final change would be to change the callipers paint to yellow, but each to their own.

How are the factory shields installed? Just double sided tape or are they also pinned and bolted on? Are the carbon replacements fitted the same? As I imagine it is quite hard to get to the back side of the wheel arch.

Cheers
Michael

Peter, my guess is it's harder to remove the factory shields than install the new ones? Any experience of doing it or know where the process might be documented?

Cheers

612: Getting the Yellow Out

Michael, Ive seen them do it in the Bodyshop, IIRC depending on the model they mainly remove the front wheel & inner arches to gain access.

Here is what the Original Shields look like, after removal.

The new shields were put on with a special adhesive by the shop that should hold for a long time.

That is the idea.

I am sick of seeing a sea of yellow shields, when I look at modern Ferraris. I want the shield to blend in and disappear. In fact, I would prefer there be no shields at all, like traditional Ferraris. But, cars with shields come with an indentation, so you have to replace them.

The bottom line is when you look at my car, you see the car - not the yellow shield.

I'm also tired of the yellow calipers too.

Not me, I love the yellow calipers and wheel centers. No shields works best for me. Yellow tach, too. Hate black wheels and lights.

If not for differing tastes, we would all be driving refrigerator white 4 doors, as I have said before.

Hi Adam, thanks for the picture of the removed shield. Do you know if the new ones have the pins or are the tapes so good they are not needed?

Cheers
