550 Barchetta roof - what's the reality?

Hi All,

I have just parted company with my Boxer, am selling my 348 spider, and I am thinking of replacing them both by purchasing a 550 Barchetta.

Are there any Barchetta owners out there who can tell me what the roof is like in real life?
e.g. Is it quick to put on if you get caught in the rain? How slowly do you really need to drive when it is on? etc etc

Any real world anecdotes would be very gratefully received. It's decision time for me and this is just about my last concern to get over.

All the best

J

Agree?

You can download a Barchetta owners manual at ferraridatabase.com. Top speed with OEM top installed is 120 kph. Not sure about the aftermarket tops.

I thought most owners treated their Barchettas as fair weather vehicles, but they can chime in.

Thanks Terry.
I will also treat it as a fair weather vehicle, but in Scotland such weather can be short-lived (!) and I do like to join the odd tour each year which could involve having to set out on a rainy day to get to the next stop.
The aftermarket Dimex top seems to be well thought of. I think I'll have to sell my SL to afford it though!!

I can vouch for the weather up there with several hundred hours of flying F-111Fs in Scotland for the low levels and bombing ranges.

Sounds like maybe use the OEM top and practice getting it installed in a resonably short period of time. Then you drive home below 120 kph/75 mph.

550 Barchetta roof - what's the reality........they weren't thinking of you lads in Scotland is the reality.

However I love the 550 Barchetta and have fingers crossed you get your hands on one.

I did see a very very good one in Stratstone Ferrari Manchester, 6 months ago but that may well be gone by now. It was as new in Rosso - absolutely fantastic car.

Cheers

I'm an expat Scot and had hoped that if the Yes! crowd won; the first thing they would have done would have been to install an Eden Project / Truman show type dome over the whole country solving the weather issue once and for all! ;-)

The standard roof is rubbish. It is hard to put up even if you have practice it, it is only good for a shower and leaks badly if it rains hard even when stationary. Its kept in a bag in the boot if you buy one first make sure you have all the parts in the bag.
A friend had the German roof which he said was much better and you can go faster but i am not sure if the buzzer still warns you that you are going too fast with the roof up as it does with the standard roof. It looks a little better and he toured around in Europe with it.

When i had my car i was constantly looking up at the sky but it was a great car and even better with the Tubi's. I had one of the drives of my life in that car, on a warm summers night driving through the old town going flat out with the exhaust note echoing off the tall old buildings. My son who I had picked up was shaking with excitement when we got home, and I had a grin for a week.

On a more practical note, you could buy a 458 spyder for the same money and have more use from that with the same sort of enjoyment, it won't hold its money as a Barchetta but what's money for other than spending !

Post of the century!

That is so fugly that I'd rather drive a Lada than be seen even dead in that 550.

That is monstrously ugly, or, in the words of a future King of England, "a carbuncle on the face of an old friend".

Best wishes, John

The hardtop is bad isn't it!
The OEM softtop isn't a whole lot better.
The Dimex softtop is apparently good for 120mph and looks no worse than a Porsche Boxster Spyder to me.
Still hunting for a car with some sensible mileage. I can't afford the ones that have only ever driven once a year to the concours lawn and I intend to use it, so putting miles on would cripple the value.
I'm looking for a 8-12K miles car. Nearly had one last week, but just missed out. Onwards.....
