456 Power Steering Pump

Does anyone know who manufactures the PS pump on a 456? I have a very small leak from the front seal of my pump and need to find out if I can get a rebuild kit or do I have to replace the pump?

It's made by ZF, although I do not know which model. (Pump shown is off of a 456M.)

David- Same pump for the 456/456M. Expensive at $1350 from Ricambi.

It's nearly the same as the pump that ZF provide for Porsche, and in fact the Porsche repair kit fits our pumps (our meaning 550's - don't know about the 456's)

John- Amazon has generic ZF power steering pump rebuild kits for around $40, but not sure they work on the ones we have.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll order that rebuild kit Taz was talking about and make this a winter project.

That Amazon kit is what I put in my 550 pump and it fit fine.

Unfortunately I didn't put the whole thing in and left the front seal out, which was probably the most important part, so it was completely rebuilt when I did my steering rack & pump testing at ADCO a couple weeks ago.

John- That is valvuable info. Looked for a power steering pump rebuilder and did not find one on the net. Will add them to my list of Ferrari rebuilders.

What does a pump rebuild run? Has to be less than $1350.

Taz, ADCO charges from $150 to $200 for a complete rebuild of the ZF pumps & test on their hydraulic "dyno" and it'll carry a lifetime warranty on the parts & labor.

The warranty doesn't cover abuse, or damage to the pump if the system isn't maintained or the pump is run dry.

Same warranty on the racks and he charges from $450 to $500 to rebuild those.

Taz, at that price and after seeing their work, and the testing they include, and the warranty, there's no way I'd tear into one of these again.

It's just not worth it, unless I lived outside the US.

Thanks for the info and insight John. When I take my pump out I'll send it out and let the pros tackle the job.

Where is ADCO located?

Thanks Taz, and BTW, don't judge them by their website

The fellow who owns/runs the place is very old school and at least 10 years behind the curve in his advertising/marketing. He still depends largely on word of mouth and a big ad in the Houston Yellow Pages for his business and hasn't put a lot of resources into his website as yet.

John- Sounds like he is good enough that Brian, Josh, and David should consider using him.

Taz, I would think so, but everyone has their own favorites and trusted vendors, so unless the quality is substantially better, they have no reason to change.

Plus they're probably wanting to see how this pump & rack that I had done work out before trying someone new & unknown.

Hoping I can get them some good feedback in 2014.....

John- I do not think Brian trusts anybody on rack rebuilds right now.
