612 A/C issue

Hello all,

I own a beautiful 05'612 which i absolutely enjoy driving. It's actually my summer daily driver. All was well till last week when the a/c quit, began blowing warm air. I assumed it needed freon. The closest place where I can service my car is 175 miles away in Toronto. However my local guy whose done a/c service on my db9 in the past took her in and checked the freon level, was down to 1.5 lbs. Her drained the system followed the procedure and placed 2.5 lbs in the system. Still blowing warm air, no leaks etc etc. he did mention he was getting a high pressure reading before draining and also after the addition.

I spoke to a tech at Lake Forest Motors in Chicago, he said it could be hvac controm module issue. Has anyone else had such issues or is their something else.

If it is the control module is that a major project, i'm sweating my ass off everyday driving her to work.

thanks in advance

It can be so many things, you need an expert to look her over and see what is happening. Like is the clutch engaging, etc. I believe the SD3 does have an air conditioning module for the 612 and the F430, so if it is an ECU/control issue, the SD3 should be able to isolate that kind of problem.

For abnormally high pressures the low Freon could have been a cause, also excessive lubricating oil in the system and auxiliary fan not kicking on are common problems. I would not suspect the control module right away, I would like at other parts of the system first.

As Taz says, knowing if the compressor is running correctly or if it's short cycling is important.

Thanks ECS, you guys actually did the pre-purchase inspection for me before i bought the car from Ferrari of washington, cant recommend you guys enough.

I'm up in Rochester NY, like i said i'm headed to NYC friday morning till sunday. Any recommendations on a good shop where i can take it in to be checked out? Otherwise I'll have to wait a few weeks until I can drive up to Toronto.

Izzy, I had a feeling while reading your post that this was the case. I appreciate the kind words. I don't know of any hidden treasures of shops up in NY. Bradan may be your best option.

A bit late to this party...

I'm from Rochester, NY and had my shop there for many, many years until I moved to NH. The only folks that might be able to help you are Craig-Autometrics. They're not a Ferrari shop but used to have some great techs there. Short or that, there's no one within several hundred miles...

And in the NYC area, your best bet would be Universal Imports. They've got some top talent that are factory trained...and I believe that they have an SD3 tester which will say you much aggravation on the long run. Nothing wrong with Bradan, they just wouldn't be my first choice with this sort of a problem.

Thanks David too bad your not still in the Roc. I'll call craig autometrics tomorrow and see. I did touch base with Brandon, nice guys. Said usually a pretty involved job to fid what the problem is. Said SD3 only guides them. Could be a simple find or need some old fashion diagnosing, probable not worth leaving the car with them for a day cause I need to drive back, would be a waste especially if they cant figure it out right away.

Universal Imports is actually in Rochester, unless there is another one in NYC. I tried googling them no luck in the city.

Looks like I may just have to go to Toronto, Cross ave Auto ( great guy, sam the owner) problem is it might not be till mid August. Still hoping I find a shop in NYC that can work on it all day friday and saturday.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Burch Craig at Craig Automterics is a straight shooter. I'd give him a shot, presuming he feels comfortable getting involved. If not...

Sorry...a bit of brain fade. I was thinking of the place in Rochester, but really meant these guys. The folks in NY that would be more suited to dealing with your AC issues are Universal Autosports. Exotic car sales and service. CCR and Ferrari Challenge Specialists.
