550 Transaxle filter...

Yep...they do need to be removed and cleaned from time to time. I suspect that I'm the first one in. With just under 12K miles, this may be a problem in the making. (Before and after) This is the dirtiest once I've seen in quite a while!

That looks like aluminum. If so it was probably left there when the case was machined.

We used to see that quite commonly in the oil filters in the 348 era. Large strands of aluminum from the machining process. They clean the blocks a little better now.

If on the other hand it is steel, might just as well take it out of the car now.

In that the magnetic drain plug was quite clean,,,and these particles were non-magnetic, I've got to agree with you Brian. It's still a tad scary to see "this much" junk in the transaxle remaining in the case after 12 years of use.

Well, that is exactly what the strainers are for....it did it's job.

I agreee, it should have been checked and cleaned long ago but TR's and BB's had a strainer and I have never seen one removed, 355, 348, 328, 308 all had strainers. Easily serviced once the transmission was removed and disassembled.

Brian- Just like the Boxer's "If for any reason you remove the engine" except "if for any reason you disassemble the transmission".
