550 Serial number / date mismatch mystery

My car's serial number is 110995, which appears to suggest that it was built in 1997 (registry shows 110997 as a '97 car). However, the delivery date / warranty start date shown in the Warranty Card is 6th. September 1999.

To add to the mystery, although mine is RHD, the first owner is shown as Pininfarina Studi e Richerche SPA in Turin (see below). The stamp at the end of the Pre-delivery service on page 2 is that of Terry Hoyle in the UK, dated 16th. November 1999, at 177 miles, i.e. delivery mileage.

Unless something obvious has escaped me (quite likely) or my car was built very far out of sequence (unlikely) there appears to be a gap of 2 years or so between it being built and being passed on by Pinninfarina to its first "real" owner, via Terry Hoyle.

Any ideas?

John- 110995 was an early 98 550, Rosso Corsa/Nero and RHD (C VIN), Assembly Number 28189, according to Matthias Urban. The car may have been kept as a display model by Pininfarina is what I would guess. Looks like she was driven very little in that nearly two year period.

Unless, of course, they fouled up and put the end of the warranty period instead of the beginning, in which case Matthias' date is off. If the distributor can use MODIS and print out a build sheet for you, it will have the official start and end of the warranty period.

Here is the build sheet for my car so you know what you need.

In any case nice to have a car that has been designed and owned by Pininfarina. Not many of us 550/575 owners can say that about their Maranello's. Did you try contacting Pininfarina to see whether they might have pics of your car in their studio or other pieces of info that might be interesting? That would be a nice piece of history!

That would seem like a posssible explanation. Terry Hoyle's stamp / date seem to confirm that Pinninfarina's date is not a mistake. The service records also correlate with a car not used until around the end of 1999.

Best wishes, John

Yes, it is rather nice to think that the first owner was the carrozzeria who designed it! No, I haven't tried anyone yet, but am intending to write to Pinninfarina to see if they can tell me anything; also Terry Hoyle.

Best wishes, John
