599 Issues?

In my research on 599s I have run across several reports from owners on electrical issues and problems with the cars systems. Is this widespread or isolated? Is it related to certain (early) model years or is it more of a widespread issue?

Thanks.

2007 had issues.

Something about the valves - can't recall exactly.

Boxer- Have not heard about any electrical issues except not being driven enough so the battery goes flat. The problem Doug is referring to is noisy lifters. Not really an issue and they are the same design lifters (different part number) fitted to the Maranellos and 612s. No complaints from the Maranello owners since there is plenty of noise coming from the engine compartment, but 612 and 599 owners complained. Ferrari solution was snake oil to quiet the lifters when the car is first started. Noise goes away as car warms and lifters fill and pump up.

I've heard some talk that Ferrari had replaced engines in 2010 599's due to noise complaints. There has been some reports of issues with the fancy new dash cluster as well. There were also complaints about differential whine which resulted in some changes in transaxle oil. I believe the transaxle issue experienced in the car I wrote about here was an isolated issue, however.

With that said, that 599 had some miles on it and has seen quite a lot more this year...all of which were put on in the most sporting of driving conditions. All in all it seems pretty stout.

I also repaired a small oil leak. Due to the similarity in design, the valve cover gaskets in the Maserati 4.2/4.7 and Ferrari 4.3/6.0 start to leak from the back corners. Also, the camshaft variator solenoids start to break down internally and oil works it's way up through the harness and into the electrical connector. The result is oil leaking out and onto the valve cover or the connection becomes saturated and disrupts signal, causing camshaft timing faults.

The 6.0 uses 4 of these solenoids, one for each camshaft. Knowing it's either an issue or about to become an issue I like to replace them while replacing valve cover gaskets. At $500ea for the current part number, a valve cover gasket reseal can get a bit pricey.

Thanks Taz, that's about all I know of the 599 at this point. As with all of these cars, I'm sure there is more to be uncovered...especially as the years go on. I feel it's all viable and note worthy information though.
