456 Window Mechanism Replacement

Attached is a PDF [28 pages] one may download to see the steps, time, hints, and tools. Hopefully the numerous pics will help.

I am NO DIYer in terms of a qualified mechanic. SO, don't feel you cannot do this on your own. My part, used, was about $225. I highly suggest you have it inspected before messing with install. Honestly, mine works, but the guys who removed it made a slight twist to the pantograph and I feel, I might be re-visiting this replacement soon.

Therefore, although the newer, upgraded OEM part is MUCH better in terms of adjusting the 'window gap' issue, my older one actually has a better pentograph. I 'might' be tempted to try the fix of that pivot point and replace it to the newer mechanism and get the final part I want/need.

Do take your time adjusting the window alignment before replacing the interior door panel as I HATE doing two screws with all my heart: Door handle to armrest [gawd I hate those two screws and it never gets easier :( ]

Taz: I feel honored. I've updated the docs a bit. BUT size restrictions on FL had me cut it into two pieces. Might want to download again.

The second doc, is a reprint of a previous post showing Ferrari's official instructions for fixing the window gaps and their updated mechanism.

Older mechanism is less straight forward.

Mine is a 456M, but suffers the same issue.
When I will open the door interior I do guess it is very similar.
i will try to do it during Winter.

Interesting. We have always believed there was never an issue with the M- series! It has been stated in print numerous times. You are the first. Can you describe problem and state year of your car? Thanks

Mine is from déc. 98.
It is not the first 456M with that issue. On our french forum Ferrarista at least 3 M have the same issue.
Maybe not as bas as your but around 2mm in the central point of the B pillar. I will post some pics.

Please do! Not yet....but I'd be interested to see how it looks in reality. All the Ms I looked at, didn't appear to have the issue....and I never inspected any non-Ms, so don't know how it looks at those cars.

Yes Henri, it would be great to see the gap on an M series to understand better.

as for the gap on non-M, it can be as large as to put your little finder inside between the gap to less. Easily a pencil in many cases.

Makes for noise issues too.

Just got off a conversation with a member at FC whom where he had his window mechanisms rebuilt by F1 Imports of Naples, FL for about $300 each including shipping. That is a bargain IMO. I got NOS ones, with old pins etc. and paid about that per side.

You send them your regulators. They fix and return in about 10 days. The pin that holds the scissororing wheel together is resplined with a stainless steel pin, not the OEM AL type. OR you can get the pins and do it your self but the mechanism is more of a problem to do so I would let them do it.

Might keep this in your bag of tricks.

really taking it a bit too far.

anyway, told him to google 456 window fix and my name granucci and it pops right up... unless of course my las name is not "*****" :|

FYI, after a few years, I have also decided to strip apart mine. Thanks to your pdf on your GT, I have also created a pdf on my MGT.

GREAT and/or BETTER in the pics area. You found the same similar problems I did and re-iterated them again: good idea.

Like your presentation......How has it gone for you since the rebuild? I mean, this IS an item to tackle again after a time.
