New owner, SW UK

Hi all, I've been keeping an eye on the forum for a while now in the lead up to purchasing my 1st Ferrari.

Basically, I have a set of goals. I LOVE a challenge, something to keep my mind occupied etc etc.

The main goal that is relevant to this site was to own a 550 by my 30th Birthday. I'm glad to say I have bought a 2000 (x) 550 with 2 months to spare.

I drove my 1st 550 when I was 18. It was given to me for the weekend of my birthday to enjoy. I had always been into fast cars, and by my 18th I had already bought 2 new M3's (still owned). I promised myself I would own that car but sadly it written off a few weeks later.

Anyway, other projects & goals meant i couldn't own a 550 for so e time so I set a date of 11/04/2014.

I picked her up today. A long term project, that I can use daily as & when I wish.

It's the now infamous Red Cat D LHD car. I plan to spend approx 8k on her over the next few weeks/months just getting it how I want it (Standard)

I get bored VERY easily, the point of buying possibly the roughest 550 in 550 history is to keep myself from boring of it.

Keep watching :-)

So you did buy it then. Good for you! I hope you are enjoying it, though sadly not the best weather for it just now.

Best wishes, John

Congratulations; Excellent choice of car, Impeccable taste in colour. Enjoy driving it and working on it. There is plenty of expertise here and with not too much electronics on the car, most things are do-able if you are well equiped with standard tools.
Look forward to seeing pictures.

All cleaned up, I'm actually rather shocked at how good it looks. There's not a mark on her!

With regards to the car, I just intend on making it the very best I can. It's very much a long term thing, I will probably never sell it..... It owes me not a lot so if I spread the repairs & maintenance over a few months I will still be relatively comfortable with it.

It all depends how I find the LHD, so far so good :-)

With regards to other cars, I would really like an old 412, so watch this space.

So............... Unfortunately, Maranello Egham felt that my car wasn't running quite right. Although I do t particularly agree with main dealers methods etc I thought I would at least get a 2nd opinion. On Saturday I decided it was worth a trip to Rardley Motors, a Ferrari specialist that I used to go to as a kid for various reasons......... I phoned the guys up & they kindly offered to take a look at the issues I was having.

I got there at approx 11am, they agreed that it sounded terrible. Partly because of the aftermarket exhaust & partly as they felt it running on less than 12.

I was not expecting any work to be carried out as I had interrupted their day, but they then made an executive decision to start stripping things :-)

Firstly they noticed the remains of a K&N sticker, so they took apart the air boxes & ripped out the K&N filters. They explained their reasons for doing so..... I was glad of it. Then they removed the spark plugs & replaced with new units, followed by the checking of the leads....... A rest period of the engine for half an hour, then an ECU reset & BOOOOOM...... The car is running like never before. :-)

I can NOT thank the guys enough. Just to stop what the were doing & help a young oik & his unpolished turd was just amazing in my eyes.

They have advised that the cam belts are due to the age of the last ones, so its staying there for a major service, as well as a steering wheel airbag retrim, a standard exhaust setup & a general going over. They also spent time showing me the condition of the engine mounts & compared them to those of another 550 in their workshop (a stunning car in TDB currently with over 100k), so I've asked them to replace these too, I believe with 575 items.

Whilst there they spent a good couple of hours checking the steering & braking etc, all to be found good :-) I'm a happy boy!!!

James- She looks great. I am with your techs, the K&Ns have oil on them and are in front of the MAF sensors, not a good combination. Glad she is running well now and that you did not have to replace the high tension spark plug wires. They are expensive. After a belt change and degreeing the cams, she should really run like a watch, but with a better sound.

Thanks tazandjan, that's what the guys said. K&N's are oil bathed or something & they contaminate the car. I am actually having the leads changed too as the plastic rail they sit on is all broken & it's just another job on the list.
I do hope there is a significant difference in the way she runs, so I can justify in my head all the spending :-)

Hi James if you need to source a standard exhaust, I have a set of 575M back boxes which I am pretty sure will fit the 550. PM me if interested.

Cheers
