Muftah- In Summer 2003, Ferrari went to straight pipes on the 575M to replace the center muffler/resonator. V12s are essentially two straight sixes on the same crankshaft and do not need an X-pipe because of the evenly spaced exhaust pulses. Some people like the sound of an X-pipe better, though, even if the straight pipes do produce more hp and torque.
Exhaust sound is so much an individual preference that it is hard to give any really good advice. I usually tell the owners of early 575Ms and 550s to just replace the center muffler with straight or X-pipes and see how you like the sound. If not, go for a different muffler. There are high end and low end systems, all of which have different sounds and are available with or without valves and in varying loudnesses for each manufacturer.
PorscheGuy does not like the sound of his Superamerica factory HGTC exhaust, but I love the sound of my identical exhaust, so you see what I mean. My favorites are valved Capristo and Kreissieg for aftermarket, but both are expensive. Add a Capristo remote, and you can open the valves whenever you want.
