Ready to buy
I have been looking for some time and it is now time to buy.
My current choices are:
A 2002 yellow 360 coupe with a phenomenal sound system and low mileage
A 2004 grigo alloy 360 spider with low mileage
or perhaps a California
Each of the above have a large increase between them
Any thoughts are guidance?
Welcome to Ferrari Life. All good choices, but I would go for the one in the best condition after a pro does an inspection using an SD2 for the 360s and whatever factory diagnostic tool they use for the California.
A stereo system would be so far down my list of priorities when buying a Ferrari, it would not even register. Get a good Ferrari and then worry about upgrading the stereo if necessary.
Stereo would be last on my list too Terry.
The engine provides just the right notes.
Good-luck with the purchase and welcome to the Life.
Are they 3-pedal cars? That would be my first choice.
Thanks for the replies and advice, the only reason I mention the stereo is it was owned by a stereo company and has a $60,000 stereo in it. I have to give that some thought even though I couldn't tell the difference between a $5,000 stereo and a $60k one
my car had a $10k stereo in it when I bought it. Non stop electrical issues(well actually the car did stop on the side of the road multiple times). I even have invoices from Ferrari with the car being towed in non-running and Ferrari trying to fix wiring issues with the previous owner, kind of nice they put in that stereo since one invoice says "replace TCU due to failed checksum from faulty stereo installation" so my 99 has a 04 TCU because of it and I didn't have to pay for it. I got stuck on the side of the road also, then I removed the stereo, fixed all the wiring issues and that was 15,000 miles ago withOUT any issues since.
Just saying, that a 60k stereo might not be worth the trouble.
The 60K 3D stereo is in the rear! Sorry could not resist! If my Fcar came with a 60K audio system, i'd pull it out, sell it and buy an exotic pair of speakers for the home audio. I'd look for the original radio to install according to the window sticker! When i shopped or my fcar, i did not even turn on the radio...even once! I didn't realize i had a CD changer until my car was in storage mode! to each his own. Good luck! OH, of your choices, i'd prefer a 2002 or above yellow coupe in 6 sp stick with perfect PPI and all campaigns done! Not to mention front and rear challenge grills-All original of course (no aftermarket)!
A 360 is too noisy to appreciate a 60.00$ stereo, just a lot of unnecessary weight.
Take your time and find a three pedal car or a CS.
Two years with my '04 360 and I still have yet to figure out how the radio works outside of turning it on and off. If there's a price premium for the stereo I wouldn't pay it. Money better spent elsewhere IMO.
90+ % of all of our electronic or chronic dead battery issues are a direct result of aftermarket stereo installations.
Aftermarket electronic device installations are a liability. Run away.
Like il Capolino said, as far as what can be appreciated in a car with that interior noise level anything more than a $200 Sony radio/CD player that is iPod compatible is a total waste.
A 60K audio system would almost be a negative for me.
Ok guys, I have decided on a spider, but I'm looking at more models and have even included making the jump to a F430.
Thoughts on a 430 vrs a 360
It's about a $30,000 difference but newer model and 86 more hp, plus better electronics And a simple stupid thing I like the steering wheel better
360 vrs 430?
Need to go topless.
We preferred the 360 when did our comparison shopping.
Based mostly on esthetics as the HP difference isn't noticeable in the driving we do.
We liked the smooth exterior lines better and the cleaner interior.
We also felt more connected to the traditional stick in the 360 and didn't care for the paddle shifters of the 430 (we couldn't find a stick 430 to test).
But all of our preferences were personal, and had nothing to do with perceived faults or shortcomings of either car.
Both cars are beutiful and as mentioned above, plenty powerful. I had your dilmma too when shopping. After reading enough service records, i decided to fork up the extra 50-70K and shop for F430. I did not want any, "Man! why didn't i...."
That being said, you should drive a couple examples of each. I really like the interior of the F430 more. Although i did not drive a 360, i have seen them side by side at dealerships and car shows. By the time i was at the dealerships though, my mind was already made up and was shopping for the F430. I was torn between 3 pedals vs 2 pedals too. One test drive in the F1 version F430 and that sealed the deal. I had a smile from cheek to cheek so big i could not sleep that night. All in all, i think you need to realize that the jump from 360 to 430 can easily be more than 30K for the right car. If your budget can allow it, F430.
So I have narrowed my choice between:
a 2005 red 360 spider
a 2007 red 430 spider pretty well loaded (original sticker $242k)
and even more load black 430 with lots of carbon fiber - including the carbon fiber brakes.
Of course the two 430s have less miles but are 50% more in cost.
Any thoughts on the carbon fiber and on color choices. Both red and black seem great but red is more traditional.
And thanks everyone for all of the advice - I am sorry I keep asking but important decision.
430 Spider, for less down time and headaches, spider for where you live, chain versus belt, and so on. Good luck with your decision.:steeringwheel:
Carbon fiber and ceramics sounds perfect also.
