348 with 50,000 miles is it a mistake
I am planning to purchase my first Ferrari, I started with the 328 on my list but decided I wanted the full convertible so I switched to the 348 or the 355. Am I making a mistake by considering a 348 with over 50,000 miles? Will the engine and mechanics need major work/costs? Should I spend the extra money to get one with around 20,000 miles. This question really goes to both the 348 and 355.
You have questions about a 20 year old car with 50,000 miles on it? Seriously...its just getting broken in. I have never seen any data suggesting the 348 has a limited mileage life and have never heard of one wearing out to the point of needing a rebuild.
Engine should be good for well over 100k mile before needing a rebuild.
Welcome to Ferrari Life. The 328 makes a good starter Ferrari because it is fairly easy to maintain. The 348 and F355 offer more performance, but require engine out maintenance every 3-5 years. That service is expensive. If you can afford the maintenance, either a good 348 or F355 is an excellent choice.
I would spend some time searching 348 and F355 threads to see what maintenance issues each has had in the past. Many of those have been solved over the years by owners and technicians. The 348 tends to have more little niggling problems that can be overcome, while the F355 has had isolated valve guide problems that are expensive to repair (sometimes new guides, valves, and valve seats, 40 of them).
Thanks for the advice. I ran a autocheck and that came up good. I was going to hire an inspection service to look the car over, $300 peace of mind. Is there anything I should have them look for. There are $5,000 in receipts from the last tune up so any specific areas of focus would be appreciated.
Again thanks for the help, I hope to be able to add a pic to my post next week.
Bought mine in the low 40's and I say if she passes a PPI and looks good, why not? I choose a higher mileage one because it was driven and not left to dry out in a garage.
I am moving back and forth between the 348 and the 355, the 355 has lower milage and some other advantages. Do you think the PPI can be done by a normal company that does that type of thing such as Road Ready, if so what should I tell them to look for? The 355 is a 1999 model so the valve should not be a problem from what I read.
I assume you've driven them both. I find the differences in feel between 348 and 355 to be stunning. I really don't like that power steering filter. Other than that, I see you are aware of the valve issue, are you also aware of the header issue?
You need to have the PPI done by a mechanic that is experienced with Ferraris and the specific model that you are looking at. There are weak spots on any car and only an experienced person will know what and how to look. E.g., the 430 has been known to have a header problem. It takes someone who "knows" to tell if the headers have been replaced.
So does the 430 have the header problem or the 355? The 1999 does not have the valve trouble at all from what I read, that was resolved in 1997.
Rob- The 456 and 456M were still having valve guide problems well after 1997, so not sure the problem was fixed because Ferrari was still using the same suppliers.
The 355 had the problem with valves until 1997, at least that is what I am reading/hearing. I am now deciding between two 1999 cars, both 355F1's.
(A) $57,000 with 9K miles (red/tan) just had engine out service, belts/pulley's, fluids ect...
(B) $48,000 with 17K miles (grigio titanio/blue) had inspection and work done but not a belt change, inspection shows belt is still good.
Both cars look clean, the second has nicer wheels. Seems like if I don't decide soon I will be writing a check for $80,000 and driving a 360 the way things are changing, I started with a 348 under $35,000!
Rob- They both sound nice.
