Yes, you do. But you can always just do a lock and swap that will leave you with the timing you already have. Not optimum, but maybe a good idea first time around. Do you have a degree wheel and dial indicators to allow you to determine TDC and cam timing? If not, you are stuck with doing a lock and swap or having someone help you who does have the equipment and expertise to do the work.
