Greetings from Suzuka (2013 Japanese GP)

Dave and I made it and are enjoying the first practice round ATM. We're situated right aabove the Ferrari pits in the F1 Paddock Club. Saw Niki Lauda in the flesh earlier and saw Alonso smoke his clutch during a hot lap.......sheesh, don't these young pups know how to drive a clutch anymore?

Cheers Jimmy, yea we're having a great time, but the logistics could use some improving. It's always the last mile that's the problem isn't it? In this case, the train from Nagoya puts us at the station in Suzuka, but no taxis from there to the circuit.

So it's a 20-30 minute hike, which may not sound too bad to some, but when you've had knee surgery and between us, we've got around 143 years, so a 30 minute walk over hilly country isn't the way you want to start or finish the day.

Here's a couple of pics from yesterday, and I'll load up Photobucket or YouTube with some of the videos from the Ferrari pits.

Yes, that's the "real" Niki Lauda in the first pic.

(For an old fart, I don't look too bad in Nomex, eh? )

First pic you can see the birthday surprise that the Ferrari F1 Club girls and I arranged for Dave. He was called up to the podium and personally wished a happy birthday by Ferrari's #1 driver, and was presented an autographed ball cap.

Alonso must have been so impressed by Dave at 80, he finally went to work instead of his usual loafing around, and set a new hot lap for qualifying (2nd pic) (which lasted until Webber & Vettel came out and blew him away, followed by Hamilton, Kimi, Grosjean and even Massa....)

We then had a cake brought out, complete with afterburning Ferrari exhaust candles. Dam near set the sprinklers off in the Club too...... Typical Ferrari........

Dave decided to become a "real" Ferrari fan (see painted pinky nail)

Last pic is of our ride back from Suzuka to Nagoya. Standing room only on the evening trains - NOT a good way to end the day. Have to say I'm not at all impressed with their logistics.

Here's a quick video I just uploaded of both Alonso & Massa leaving their stalls and going out for qualifying this afternoon.

Here's the final grid for tomorrow (everyone was quite pleased to see Mark Webber take the pole away from Vettel). Massa outqualified Alonso, which was no surprise. Alonso can't seem to qualify as fast as he can race, and Massa can't seem to race as well as he can qualify.

1 Mark Webber (Aus).....Red Bull..... 1:30.915secs

2 Sebastian Vettel (Ger)..... Red Bull...... 1:31.089

3 Lewis Hamilton (Gbr)..... Mercedes GP..... 1:31.253

4 Romain Grosjean (Fra)...... Lotus F1 Team..... 1:31.365

5 Felipe Massa (Bra)...... Ferrari...... 1:31.378

6 Nico Rosberg (Ger)...... Mercedes GP........ 1:31.397

7 Nico Hulkenberg (Ger)...... Sauber-Ferrari...... 1:31.644

8 Fernando Alonso (Spa)...... Ferrari........ 1:31.665

9 Kimi Raikkonen (Fin)...... Lotus F1 Team..... 1:31.684

10 Jenson Button (Gbr)..... McLaren...... 1:31.827

Likewise Jimmy; it was great to meet you finally, and hopefully we'll be seeing more of each other in the future.

I just arrived to SFO and am in between flights. Next stop IAH and home.

What a trip - I'll update with more pics in a day or two, once I'm lucid again.
