Ferrari of Singapore

So I figure I'm here in Singapore and I ought to stop by the Ferrari dealer like I did in San Francisco, just to take a picture of the dealership. You know, say I've been there and all. I look it up online and find that the dealer, Hong Seh, is only like 10 minutes from the shipyard. So I head on over on Friday afternoon and find it is a gated dealership and they have a little guardshack out front. They are just closing and I don't want to bother them I just want to snap a picture. So I go up to the guard and ask him if it is OK if I just grab a quick picture and I'll leave. Evidently those kinds of decisions are made at a much higher pay grade than his so he has to go get someone in charge. A manager comes over and asks me what I want. I tell him I just want to grab a quick picture and he says, "No, I don't think so." I'm like, "What?" He says, "I cannot let you do that." I was like, "I can't just take a quick picture of the building?" He says, "No. I cannot let you do that, you should leave now."

I was stunned. So I walked 10 feet until I was off their property and turned around and took the picture anyway. He got all kinds of upset and started hollering at me. I gave him the finger and told him to go fuck himself and got back in my cab and left. Below is the picture I took. The guy in the red is the one who got all bent out of shape at me.

I tell you what, Singapore is a great place and the Singaporeans are among the friendliest and most polite people in the world. Except for the folks at Ferrari. After the 2 minutes I spent at the Hong Seh dealership I felt like selling my Ferrari and buying a Corvette. I will never wear a Ferrari T-shirt in Singapore because I don't want to be associated with the brand.

Pete, Hope you don't mind, but the following is a copy of the note I sent to Ferrari headquarters today on your Singapore experience.

Dear Sir,

A friend of mine who is also a long time Ferrari owner recently visited the Ferrari dealership in Singapore. The following is a note he sent on his experience:

I am bringing this to your attention as I am sure this is not the type of image or behavior Ferrari expects from any of its worldwide dealerships.

Sincerely,

Asian culture

Pete,

Sorry to hear about your experience in Singapore. I travel to Asia and Singapore quite often. I agree that Singporeans are usually very friendly. I have never been to the dealership in Singapore. I'm going next month. I think I'll stop by with my friends and see if the reception is the same.

Pete, a shame but that kind of thing happens more often than we think...

Boxer, great that you let the Ferrari headquarters know that this happened. I always say that the good people can't stay quiet when someone does something wrong. If we can't fix it, we should at least complain about it to someone that can fix it.

I had the same type of experience once with a dealer in Germany. It really boiled my blood so I called Maranello. They immediately got all over the dealers case.

Very cool Boxer! Thanks!

I remember when I visited Fantasy Junction in San Francisco as per Andrew's recommendation. When I went in there a representative came over asking if he could help me and I said all I wanted to do was look around and asked if I could take some pictures; he said, "Yeah, go right ahead. Take your time and if you have any questions I'll be right in my office over there." He handed me an inventory list with all the prices of the cars and turned me loose. Ferrari of Singapore wanted me off their property.

I guess some of it is that in the USA or in Europe there is more competition and the dealers need to treat you right or you'll go somewhere else. Over here there isn't somewhere else.

That answer sounds more like what I would expect from Ferrari.

My pleasure.

I am sure if you call them up in about a week and ask for a tour of the dealership and workshop, they will now be highly accomodating.

Thanks but I doubt I will. Like the old saying goes, "You only get one chance to make a first impression."
