looking to join the club

Hello everyone. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks while doing some research on a 348 Spider purchase.

I've narrowed it down to a couple of candidates - both of which have full logs around 40K miles with 30K major service completed. I am looking for recommendations on a reputable service shop to do a PPI in Chicago.

I will be traveling to check out the cars once the vehicle gets a clean bill of health.

Any insight or guidance is very much welcome.

shops in Chicago for PPI

Funny you should ask. I literally just started looking for a shop today in the Chicago area to do a PPI. I used to live in the Chicago burbs but I am now in Minneapolis area. Looked at a 355 there 2 weeks ago.
I found the following and called them today. Seemed pretty reasonable
Midwest Performance Cars, 1385 W. Lake St. (Lake and Ogden area)
312-432-9492

If you go with them, let the group now about your experience.

Also consider Lake Forest Ferrari. If the car your looking at is near them, they were probably the service tech's. They helped me when I was shopping for my 348. They had a nice Tb, black on tan, real pretty. While trying to get together on price I found my SS in Texas. If I remember correctly theirs had a SS tranny (close ratio) but was a regular Berlinetta.

There was another TsSS near Chicago listed on Luxcars.com. Number 98 I think. Nice car but a odometer problem conflicting with carfax. Probably not a real issue but I didn't need that headache. Also, Not a true SS, regular seats vs the Kevlar buckets.

There was a Ferrari Mechanic other than Lake Forest recomended to me for PPI. It might be the guy referenced in this thread. I called and spoke to him and his wife about one of those cars. Can't find his number now but I'll keep looking.

BTW...Magnum is right...The club348 site is Awesome

making progress

Made contact with Midwest performance and spoke with a specialist named Tom Simmons. He described the PPI as about a 2 to 3 hour job that reviews the paperwork, interior, exterior and mechanicals.
I will also call Lake Forest to see what they sound like.

I'll continue to report back as I make progress.

need more help

I made contact with the shop recommended in Chicago. The PPI on the Chicago car will be done next week. I have also found a candidate car in Dallas (which happens to be home) so now I'm searching for someone to do a PPI in dallas (the car is at the local Ferrari dealer so would prefer someone other than the dealer to do the PPI). Any suggestions would be welcome.

midwestperformance

All -
I did make contact with guys at Midwestperformance. He completed a PPI for me in the promised timeframe. His report to me was very thorough. He was very prompt and gave a thorough report. Have an assesment of the paint, body, interior - including checking to make sure paint was all original. He evaluated the car in motion - cold start , warm start, and driving. Also took a thorough look into the engine compartment - found it all dry - did find a couple of small things to sort out - he gave it a 8/10 - mostly b/c I will need to have a major done in a year (not b/c of mileage).

I will report back if a close on the car and then again after I've lived with it for a bit

yeah! heading to pick it up

Getting on a plane to head off to pick up a new (to me) red and black 348 Spyder. Should get my hands on it sometime after 3 US central time.

PPI passed with flying colors - will bring home to Texas and have a major done in January (even in TX January weather is not agreeable with a convertible experience)

I'll post pictures when I return to TX.

The collection trip.......fantastic. No better way of getting to know your new Ferrari than spending a few days behind the wheel.

Have a great time.

Made it Home

950 miles - no problems - except for the 10 mile escort from a Missouri state trooper who seemed very frustrated not to find a reason to pull me over.

Started my 'to be fixed' list - nothing major on it so far. She ran like a champ the entire drive down - 13 hours in two days!

A couple of pictures to enjoy.

the spider version of the 348 is very sexy, much better than the berlinetta and targa versions IMHO

are the other cars yours too?? if they are, quite a garage you have!

Been there a couple of times. Worst was in the F40 with 2 French motorcycle cops who sat in my blind spot (one of each side) for about 10 minutes. First the one of the left went roaring off. I think they were hoping that I had not seen the other. After a couple of more minutes, finally the one on the right took off.

950 Miles WOW I like to hear stories like yours, I would love to drive mine back from Austin TX back to Sask Canada about the same distance but I'm a little leery ( time, wear and tear, my gal nagging me to slow down) you know. Who knows I might change my mind by then.

Well - can't do much about the time or the wear and tear - but on the gal side - it was a guys trip - took my dad had the most extensive conversations i've had with him in the last 10 years. And yes that's with the top down and the song of the engine going.

That's awesome. If you are anything like me I don't get the chance (too busy)
very often to sit and talk with my dad 1 on 1 sounds like you had a great time.
