Maintenance 456 GT

Hi all, I am thinking of trading in my F355 for a 456 GT or M GT. How are 456's maintenance wise?

Expensive, very expensive. Here is a copy of a post I made on a similar question a while ago:

I would suggest to start by downloading and reading the 456 Buyer Guide here. You should be able to find it in the Library Section.

Happy to share my experience. On the positive side it is a very comfortable car to drive great distances in. I drove mine from one end of Spain to the other in a day and did not need an appointment with the chiropraticer afterwards. Engine is terrific; it is fast rather than quick due to the weight of the car. At 100 mph the 456 GT just sits on the highway eating up the miles. 2 adults and 2 kids fit comfortably and it has enough luggage room for a couple of decent size bags. You can even jam 2 adults in the back for short trips. For a 12 cylinder Ferrari, they are reasonable to buy. IMHO, definitely one of Pininfarinas best designs.

On the negative, I thought that they were full depreciated but turned out to be wrong. In the year I had the car, I lost $$$ on depreciation. The window seals are crap and wind noise at high speed is just part of the cars charm. I understand that they more or less fixed this on the 456 M GT. I bought a car with a full service history that had been well cared for by both the prior owners. Despite this I still ended up spending quite a bit on maintenance which included a clutch replacement, new horn, minor electrical problem rectifications, seat motor repairs, etc. All in, by far the most expensive Ferrari I have owned.

In the end however the decision to sell was as much based on the personal preference as it was cost. To drive, the 456 GT does a lot of things really well. Probably too well for my taste. It is the only Ferrari I have owned where I always had the stereo on vs the others where I find myself listening to the engine etc. Net net, we did not bond. I had similar experience with the 911.

If you do decide to buy a 456 GT, go through the car with a microscope yourself first. Make sure everything electrical works not only when the car is sitting on the driveway, but also when pushing it hard on the road. Wiring on these can be an issue and connections that seem OK when sitting, come loose the first bump you hit in the road. The rear shocks are another weak point and will need replacing at some point in the 1st decade. Make sure this has been done as it is a $$$$ job. The clutches are fairly strong but when they start to go, the end is quick. Make sure it is in good condition with a lot of life left. The engine mounts and steering rack also degrade over time. One telling sign is if the nose dives when you hit the brakes. Make sure the stereo works properly as they are near impossible to replace. They are no longer made. After you have done all this, then I would get a Ferrari trained mechanic you trust to do a full Pre Purchase Inspection. The cost of fixing anything on a 456 GT is more than the PPI cost.

Two very different cars, think long and hard about that decision and be sure to drive a few 456s as it will be very different from the F355.

Thanks for your good advice. To be honest, I have not driven a 456 yet. Maybe the first testdrive will be a big disappointment. Anyway, after 4 years in my beloved F355, I am thinking of upgrading to the 12 cylinder league. Is the 550 a better choice with regards to maintenance and driving experience?

Absolutely, the 550 and 456 aren't even in the same league. The 550 gets its roots from the early V12 Berlinettas that were front engine. The 456 isn't a bad car, but it isn't a 550 either.

The 550 is more of a drivers car than the 456 GT. After driving a F355 for a number of years I think you will find a 456 GT very large and heavy. Great for high speed cruising on the autobahn but after a F355, not that much fun to cane up a mountain road.

Unless you have kids, the 550 for sure.
Where do you park your 355 in A'dam? I'm looking for a safe place.

Is the maintenance really that bad on the 456? I'm looking at buying my first and am being told their no worse than anything else (a clutch 1K etc) . I like the fact its got 4 seats and when I was a student a guy next door had one I coveted but if theres a better bet for a first ferrai ..........

A clutch is at least GBP 2.5k and that was several years ago.

between the 550 and 456 i would not even remotely bother looking at a 456. forget it. for every reason. styling and maintenance. the 456 is a nice looking car, but it's not a 550. different wavelengths of reality.

Thanks, think I will test a 550 and just take the kids out in the Saab.......Was the 2.5k for the clutch a main dealer price? I have been quoted 1k by a specialist here in the Midlands but as ever its all been said as part of the sales talk.........

i've heard as well that the 456 transmission is an absolute nightmare if in need of service. horror stories that would frighten the dead.

Im surprised to heat so many negative comments on the 456! I would say get one if you want the 4 seats. If you dont, then get a 550 as some of the comments about it being a better drive are true. Thats not to say that the 456 is not a great drive, but it is heavier.
