Always wanted to know..

.... whats the difference between:

1) a Ferrari 308 GTS and a 308 GTB?

2) a regular F355 F1 & an F355 Berlinetta & an F355 GTS?

3) Why is it called the 'Superamerica' if it wasnt built for the U.S. market?

Present:
1997 E38 BMW 740il.
2004 E53 BMW X5 4.4i.
2004 E46 BMW M3 Coupe.
2005 Maserati Quattroporte.

Question 1:
308 GTS = 3.0 liter, 8 cylinder, Grand Touring, Spider body (removable roof).
308 GTB = 3.0 liter, 8 cylinder, Grand Touring, Berlinetta body (hard top).

Berlinetta = Hard roof
GTS = removable roof
Spider = Convertible
GTB = hard roof

F1 = additional factory mods

Like they said before, the GTS is the removable roof, not the spyder, thats the convertible. The F1 refers to the Formula one transmission (Flappy paddle gear box per Jeremy/top gear). GTB and berlinetta are essentially synonomous. This notation applies to most models (if not all).

One thing I never got was Barchetta. The italian translation is 'Small Boat'!!

It makes sense but I always found it funny that they call their cars boats.

Lastly, the Superamerica wasnt BUILT for the US, it was marketed for the US. There are Euro spec superamericas but the US is Ferrari's largest market these days. Same deal with the CA Spyders. There were many made, not all were US spec.

The 'Superamerica' name was first used in the 1950's IIRC

2- F1 badging on a F355 signifies that the car has the F1 type paddle gearbox. It was available on all 3 F355 versions starting in 1998. Berlinetta and GTB are identical = fixed roof coupes, GTS or TS are Targa removable roof cars, and a Spider is the convertible.

3 - Superamerica is a term Ferrari originally used in the 50's and 60's. In general these models had both extra power and more luxury type features. In the case of the 575 Superamerica it follows the same basic principles as the early cars as it has a few extra features (vs. the 575 M) and is mostly aimed at the US market.
