v8 ferraris vs. v12

I have been in love with ferraris since I set eyes on them, the first one I fell in love with as a kid was the testerossa, but my question that I can never get answered, and there probably isn't a real answer because it's an opinion, but my gut tells me to go after getting a testerossa or 512 for the looks and the v12, but is there a definate difference in the sound and performance of the flat 12 compared to that of like a 355?

A 12 is sweet. A v-8 is OK.

I like class. Get a 12.

12 cylinders or walk.

8)

12 cylinders or walk

This is a quote from a friend that has had V8s and V12s,

"Once you get a V12 Ferrari you will not want to go back to the V8s"

That is a paraphrase. The V8s are quick and nimble, the V12s are heavier beast but still handle well. I'm not sure there is a better sounding Ferrari than the F355 and it is a V8.

The 550 Maranello is very quiet for some people's taste. The Testarossa has a nice sound and is deeper than the F355.

If you are going to consider one of these two models I highly recommend our Buyer's Guides. If it were my choice I would get the F355, it is IMO a better car than the Testarossa. The 512 TR vs. the F355 becomes a little more difficult in choosing as they are both great cars. You also have to consider the age difference of the cars.

Hope this helps and welcome to Ferrari Forum.

There's a reason the F575 doesnt have a radio standard. The very same reason the 250GTO didnt; the symphony thats under the hood is all you should need.

There is no sound quite like a Ferrari V8. I'm not too impressed with the sound of the V12 Ferrari, be it the 550 or 575, or even the F50.

As far as the performance between the 355 and the Testarossa, I think you'll find that the 355 is the better performing car. The 355 is going to be faster and more nimble than the Testarossa.

If you are buying for the sound track, than go with a 51BB. For total performance my pick would be a 550 and just on handling a F355.

Haven't heard a GTO in person. And the F50 wasn't really being taken up in the RPMs where I'm sure it sounds better. I still stand by the fact that I think the 355 sounds much better than the three cars I originally listed.

I would suggest getting behind the wheel of a F355 and a Testarossa and see which you enjoy driving more. How much different are they? Well to really notice the difference I think you need to have taken some kind of courses on a racetrack to really know the limits of the cars. If you are at that level then you'll find the F355 handles better. For aggressive pleasure driving on a country road you'll notice the TR is heavier and the backend will be easier to fish-tail.

Thanks enzo for that reply, because it's so hard to tell on regular roads which car is better, especially I think cars of these caliber.

For track and back roads, the F355 by far. For long high speed highway driving, then my pick probably would be the TR based on the 12 cylinder power plant.

IMHO, the best Ferrari of modern vintage is the 550/575. I am absolutely buying a 550 as soon as I find the right one, (the wait is killing me) as far as a 512 TR or a 355 goes. The 512 is bigger and faster, more expensive to repair and harder to get in and out of if you are tall. The 355 is smaller, much more agile and a bit easier to drive, or at least drive well, as it is a bit more forgiving of mistakes. The 360 is a better car to drive than the 355 if you can afford the extra $$$$ but the 355 is a good buy right now. Drive them both, more than once if you can and then decide, or if that becomes too difficult, as previously mentioned, buy them both.

Given that 550's are trading for less then 360's, I believe of the modern cars, this is the one to buy right now. Long term, it probably will hold its value and may even become a classic in 20 years. In terms of production numbers it is 3,600 for the 550 , 10,000 for the F355, and 16,000 for the 360.

The only other issue I found people having problems with is the drivers height in the 512's, I'm 6'3 and I've heard that taller people don't fit to well inside. Any others found this?

I am 6'2" and just fit in both the 365 GT4 BB & 512 BB. I was not comfortable in the Dino 246 and the 308/328 is borderline. Not an issue on any of the 1990+ models (348, F355, 456 GT etc.)
