212- Great car and great V12 sound. Did these ever run at LeMans? Seems like Ferrari passed on LeMans for some reason.

I believe not as Ferrari won every possible race with this type who prooved almost unbeatable.. but not Le Mans. Need to "dip" into the history of the type...do not remember anymore, sorry.

Petrolicious really knows how to make a great car video.

The last Ferrari works effort at LeMans was 1973 w/ the 312PBs.

Starting grid
1- Pace / Merzario Ferrari 312 PB #16, 3' 37" 5
2- Ickx / Redman Ferrari 312 PB #15, 3' 38" 5
3- Beltoise / Cevert Matra-Simca #10, 3' 39" 3
4- Pescarolo / Larrousse Matra-Simca #11, 3' 41" 8
5- Schenken / Reutemann Ferrari 312 PB #17, 3' 42" 3
6- Jabouille / Jaussaud Matra-Simca #12, 3' 44" 7
7- Wollek / Depailler Matra-Simca #14, 3' 45" 3

Arturio Merzario-Carlos Pace Pole/ 2 nd overall
red car with green stripe

Jacky Ickx-Brian Redman DNF
red car with yellow stripe

Carlos Reutemann-Tim Schenken DNF
red car with blue stripe

The car in the Petrolicious video is 0892, the car that came in second at LM.

Terry, I went into "my library" and found the following:

In 1971, Ferrari sent only 512 M's and 365 GTB/4 Daytonas ( for GT class) into the race of Le Mans.

In 1972, Ferrari decided to withdraw all cars 1 week before the Le Mans event on June 10/11th. (although the Le Mans "Test-Weekend" in March 18-19th, prooved the 312 P's the fastest time wise with 3m40.4s. the lap). Comment: "Ferrari felt that the 312P's were not really suitable for a 24 hour race as the Boxer engines in tests had failed to show that they were capable of standing up to long drawn-out high-speed tests. (!!)"

You know, this is really interesting as it fits the "picture" of the rather unsuccessful racing history of the 365/512 BB's in GT classes. (compared to..lets say the way to heavy but durable competition Daytonas with different engine construction/layout). Engine heat may be one of the main issues they conclude in another Report.

But then in 1973, against the previous' years decision, Ferrari entered 3 new 312 P's (Ichx/Redman + Merzario/Pace + Reuteman/Schenken). The Merzario/Pace car finished second (behind a Matra), the other 2 failed to finish, one with a hole in the engine, the other on 2nd place with a failed valve after 22 hours of running.

All information from Hans Tanner's book "Ferrari" fifth Edition.

212, Bryan- Thanks, that is what I seemed to remember, but had forgotten about 1973 and getting whupped by a Matra, which had to sting. I did remember they were so far ahead in the championships that it did not matter.

Makes the 250 LM still their last overall LeMans winner and worth the investment in the 250 LM, even if it was never homologated as a GT. At $15M+ each now, they should have kept a few. The factory could make a fortune with a continuation series of GTOs or 250 LMs with even serial numbers. Worked for Shelby.

I love it!

Re: the 250LM; isn't there one parked next to the 312PB in the video? I didn't realize Read owned one. Not a bad line-up! Marcel says there are 11 LMs currently living in the US.

Anybody still have Marcel's 250 LM book? Like a dummy, I sold mine and I would like to know how many LHD 250 LMs were built.

That video is spectacular.

You can almost smell the pits at willow springs.

Wow. That is a car.

I believe Petrolicious has a contract with FNA to do 5 videos related to Ferrari's 60 years in the US (plus associated articles) so we might see the LM in a future video

The sound of these PB's is something truly special. Was lucky enough to see one race in South Africa 3 or so years ago and the sound it made was just incredible as was the fact it absolutely obliterated a Porsche 956 around your twisty track here.
