Engine revving & clutch wear question

Good afternoon everyone from the scorching hot Greece.I have seen today some videos from this year's Gumball 3000 rally and i saw that some people to rev the hell out of their engines.I have heard and read that this harms the engine, but how does it actually harm it ? Plus, a gearbox specialist told me back last winter when i was in Germany for the Christmas holidays, that if you go off the gas pedal, press the paddle, let the car change gear and after letting the car complete the gear change then go on the throttle again, this actually saves the clutch when it's cold. Is this true or just another myth ?
