For you future (or current) Track Junkies
Here's some information that may be helpful to anyone looking at a future purchase of a driving suit, nomex underwear, balaclava, helmet, etc.:
I held an SCCA Nat'l Competition License for nearly 20 years but stopped racing a number of years ago. I'm dipping my toes back in the racing waters, so I had to re-familiarize myself with the market, offerings, and prices.
Helmet first: Lots of "price alignment" with the major brands such as Bell, Arai, OMP, etc. Everyone seems to have the same price on helmets. I ended up with an OMP Grand Prix 10. The best price on that particular helmet is $599.
Like with helmets, I found there is a lot of "price alignment" with all the major brands of nomex underwear from all the usual well-known vendors such as Northstar Motorsports, Apexperformance, OGRacing, Safe Racer, etc., and even the "discount" vendors. If you want a quality set of nomex, you're pretty much going to pay about the same regardless where you buy it. I bought a set of Simpson and a set of Sparco. You can buy "off brands" or lesser known brands for less, but I prefer a name brand. Speedway Motors's prices on nomex underwear is good but their inventory is fairly limited.
However, it's a different story when it comes to a Drivers Suit. Not counting the usual price differences between 1, 2 and 3 layer suits, I found a wide difference in pricing when comparing apples to apples. I bought a Sparco Jade Top one piece, 3 layer suit. SFI 3.2A/5. After looking at a number of suits online and in person, I was amazed at the quality of this Sparco suit. It is comparable to much more expensive suits. I found Speedway Motors and their regular price is a huge bargain. The same suit is offered by some of the well-known sources at a higher price.
Just my 2 cents......hope it helps someone.
