Irish Road Racing

Folks
Something to wake you up on a Monday morning.
Crazy Irish road racers. If you want an adrenaline kick, come to Ireland, hide in a ditch and watch these boys go past. Just spectating is incredible...

That certainly wakes me up!

The NorthWest 200 in Northern Ireland is of course famous as the warm-up for the TT Isle of Man, and it is just as crazy. So I know that the Irish boys are not to be underestimated. I am not a bike man myself (too much of a wuss really) but I really want to go and see the road racing one day. As mentioned before, I just love "Closer to the Edge", the 2010 movie about the TT Isle of Man, and the more I watch it the better it gets. Quite amazing what these guys get up to. I understand it less and less, but am fascinated more and more.

Great stuff! Good to see that this sort of thing can still happen in our safety-obsessed world. It's not that I want to wind the clock back to the days when drivers were regularly getting killed, but there is something a little sterile about a lot of today's motor racing.

Best wishes, John

For the uninitiated what sets the NW200 and other Irish road races apart from the Isle of Man TT races is that they operate mass starts. Real time, head to head racing. IOM starts are riders setting off at intervals. Utterly bonkers but totally absorbing.

Very good point. First lap in the NW200, skerries 100 and all the others is simply crazy to watch. Completely and utterly bonkers.

I think it would be more interesting if normal everyday traffic were on the road during the race.

Relentless application of throttle. It's amazing that the suspension and tires can keep that thing attached to that lumpy pavement with all of the cornering forces AND acceleration going on.
