Got an internship!

Good evening everybody! Hope everyone is doing well.
I had an internship at a local automotive shop yesterday. It went well! My dad knows the owner which is how got connected.
For now my schedule is 2 days a week, one full day and a half day. After awhile if he likes my work, he will hire me on staff. I start December 3rd. I'll give a report then.
They everything exept body work. During my interview we did a wheel alignment, pretty sophisticated technology!

Thanks everyone! I have to go shopping for my mechanic clothes soon. Don't think it'll be today cause I'm getting ready to head out hunting.

Do yourself a favor. The emphasis in the industry, many industries really, is to teach you how to fix a car. What you need is to learn how they work and most of that will be up to you. Once you learn how they work (and that will be a never ending task) learning how to fix them is easy.

Most people in this industry are just taught how to replace parts and a little bit of recognizing that they are worn out. The trained monkey approach is good enough to make your employer a profit and that is all he really cares about. Someone who really understands how it all works in an in depth way is miles ahead when problems happen. In many cases people like that are not available and the workshop resorts to replacing parts until it works acceptably well. In reality that is often the more cost effective way but not always.

If you have a very good background in theory and are very good at applying it in making a good diagnosis then effecting a quality repair you will be a very rare commodity but jobs that will compensate you for that are equally rare. Even in big dollar pro racing, including F1 the trained monkey approach is far more common. The Ferrari business used to be a good home for people of that skill set but not too much anymore.

Mechanics clothes?

You mean blue jeans, sneakers and black "T" shirts?

Today was my first day on the job as a intern! It was awesome! I have already learned so much. I worked on several different cars with all different problems. My favorite thing today was either replacing the mass air flow sensor or using the diagnostic equipment! I worked a total of 12 hours!

Cutter- Sounds like they are using you for more than a gofer, so that is good. Start building up a good tool set for the future. Snap-On, Mac, etc so they last forever. Pretty much all mechinics' jobs assume you come with your own tools except for special marque tools and diagnostics computers.
