What Type of Oil and Fluids Do You Use?

Most of us here have been asked that question dozens of times, so I thought it might make a helpful thread if we all documented what we use. That way owners can come to this thread and make educated choices about what to use. To make it easy for everybody, I made up a Word document so all you have to do is plug in your choices. Please be very specific with as much info on name and viscosity/weight as you can, if applicable. To start out, I will put in the recommendations from Ferrari, in this case from the 575M owners manual, as a baseline, and then add in my own choices, only one of which is on Ferrari's list. Feel free to add comments on your choices and why you think someone else's choices are less than optimal (more polite than saying they are full of crap).

Also attached is the Ferrari tech bulletin telling owners Ferrari has switched to Shell products and they are suitable for all earlier cars.

Ferrari Recommendations:

Motor Oil: Shell Ultra Helix 5W-40 or 0W-40 (10W-60 for Hot Climates)

Gearbox Differential Oil: Shell Transaxle Oil 75W-90

F1 Gearbox System Fluid: Fiat Tutela CS Speed

Brake and Clutch System Fluid: Shell DONAX UB Brake Fluid DOT4 Ultra

Cooling System Coolant: Shell Glycoshell

Hydraulic Steering System Fluid: Shell Donax TX

My choices:

Motor Oil: Valvoline Synpower Full Synthetic Motor Oil 5W-40

Gearbox Differential Oil: Valvoline Synpower Full Synthetic Gear Oil 75W-90

F1 Gearbox System Fluid: Fiat Tutela CS Speed

Brake and Clutch System Fluid: ATE Super Blue Racing Brake Fluid DOT4

Cooling System Coolant: Valvoline Zerex G-05 Antifreeze/Coolant

Hydraulic Steering System Fluid: Valvoline DEXRON VI ATF

CV- For a while, Walmart was a good source for Quaker State Q in bulk containers. That was then Shell Ultra Helix rebadged for the US.

I sure would not use what Ferrari recommends!

Dump the Shell and go with Redline.

Flush that tranny/gearbox every 12 months min as well!

All I know, since owning for a month so far, is I choose Mobil1 for oil. I'll dig in and find the best. I did ditch the Shell on the 06 Maserati Cambiocorsa.

Thanks for this thread !

212- The Shell foamed too much for my techs' and my tastes. The Valvoline does not foam. Price is about the same as Quaker State Q, which is rebadged Helix Ultra in the US. I actually think the Valvoline is a better oil and the other Valvoline products are superior to the Shell equivalents.

Good idea Terry

Here we go :

Motor Oil: Shell Ultra Helix 5W-40

Gearbox Differential Oil: Shell Spirax S5 ATE 75W90 (Direct replacement of Shell Transaxle Oil 75W-90)

E-Diff Fluid for manual (or F1): Shell Spirax S4 ATF HDX (Direct replacement of Shell Donax TX)

Brake and Clutch System Fluid: Motul RBF 600

Cooling System Coolant: Shell Glycoshell Concentrate

Hydraulic Steering System Fluid: Shell Spirax S4 ATF HDX (Direct replacement of Shell Donax TX)

I never experienced foaming issues with the Shell products on my F430.

Here is a pdf document of Shell product replacements:

E-Diff Fluid for manual (or F1): Shell Spirax S4 ATF HDX (Direct replacement of Shell Donax TX)

Does that come in a NS/noshock formula?

As far as I know, the Spirax S4 and S5 do not contain friction modifiers.

Rik- I hope you are talking about using that for your power steering system, or is yours a GTA? The no shock suffix is only for manual transmissions and transaxles and does not affect ATF (automatic transmission fluid) as far as I know.

I'll take that as a LOL. I may be a newb, but not entirely dumb...or am I

I did mix the DEXRON 4 with a 6 as had no choice on the road....it was sounding and handling that bad.

Rik- Dexron IV and VI are compatible if from the same manufacturer, no sweat.

Figured you would get a laugh out of that.

Terry, The only answer I have is whatever they put in at the Ferrari dealership....

But it all works just fine, never have to put any oil in between changes (5000 miles) and all the other fluids are also O.K. when checked.

And you know that I drive my car all the time !

cheers,

Bill

Bill- As long as you maintain it the way you do, or Stef does, the Shell products at the dealership will work fine. Some of the pros grump about some Shell products, but the problems are often caused by deferred maintenance and extended use. Deferred maintenance and long change intervals show up the worst qualities in any fluid or oil.

Mine gets driven 2-5 times a week.
