Rare 1952 340 Mexico Vignale Coupé Sold for $4.2million

The 2011 Amelia Island sale was a record-breaking success, posting a remarkable $24.3 million in total sales, the highest tally achieved in the event’s 13-year history. In total, the single-day sale presented some 103 lots, including a selection of vintage motorcycles, before a packed house, with a strong 96% of all lots sold at its Amelia Island sale to claim the top results of the weekend.

Top sales honors of the weekend went to a rare 1952 Ferrari 340 Mexico Vignale Coupé, chassis number 0224 AT, offered from the private collection of Larry Nicklin. One of just three built and boasting a superlative racing pedigree, the hugely valuable competition coupé sparked a spirited bidding war in the room and on the phones, exceeding its pre-sale estimate to sell for an extraordinary $4,290,000. Also offered from the Nicklin Collection and exceeding its pre-sale estimate was a highly original 1953 Ferrari 212 Inter Vignale Coupé, chassis number 0267 EU, which realized $660,000. Both examples were offered for the first time in 30 years.

That Mexico..

The front fenders on that 340 to me show shades of the TR pontoons. They are somewhat strange looking. Overall, a very interesting car.

amazing what a good photographer can do. that car looked funky in person. the fenders were extraordinarily thin. We had a pow wow behind it for about a half hour with the boys from Dew. I didn't like it much. Shows how bad my taste is? Hell, i didn't even take a pic of it.

The 275 went a little low because they announced it was not numbers matching right before it went on the block.

Other than the slightly-too-large grille, the '53 212 is stunning and timeless. Probably not a bad buy...
