Inexpensive IR Temp gun for header temps?

What are you guys using for inexpensive IR thermometers?

I think I have that ability to mentally justify one at the moment to check the temps on my geothermal system loops and most anything I see will do that job. Again most anything will also do tires. Id REALLY like something that will also be able to check exhaust header temps..so 1200F I guess???

While I could borrow one for a weekend for the job at hand....it would be a nice tool to add to my collection.

So, what are you guys using?

Check out HarborFreight.com Presently they have one on sale for $29.99. At that price, who cares about durability. Its max is 968F. Will that work? Also, price shown at this link does not include the coupon which makes it 29.99

If you or anyone you know has a AAA membership, they regularly have a 20% off any single item coupon in their VIA magazine for Harbor Freight.

Here's the $129 one I bought awhile back for shooting headers. Before this, I had borrowed someone's $500 Snap-On, but it only went to 950 or 1000 degrees, and a couple times it became "blinded" by some superhot runners and wouldn't read.

Mine goes to 1400, and so far, has worked fine.

BTW, these aren't recommended for shooting shiny surfaces as they confuse the laser. Only dull metal or dark ceramic coatings will read well.

This one came with an auxiliary K thermocouple which is good for taking contact measurements up to 2000 degrees F.

Just after I bought mine (about 2 years ago) I found a Craftsman model that also went to 1400, and only cost around $79 or $99....

High mileage, low compression, and missing on a few cylinders.....just like my cars.

Yeah, I got the harbor freight one too. It works great for checking the oven temp or friolator oil temp or even my forehead temp when I get pissed off at the help and I just want to explode.

It's a cool device, you just point it at something, pull the trigger and it tells you the temp. I used one in the food industry several years ago. It was critical to take temp readings inside a large freezer, these are the best way to do that from a large distance.

This is what I use for karting - tire, brake, and expansion pipe temps. 0-600F. $77.

$200, but 0-1400 with a tire probe.

Per the points above, the laser's reading is highly dependent on the surface finish of what you are shooting. You're usually just comparing like surfaces (right front tire vs. left rear tire), so it doesn't cause a problem. But, it is something to keep in mind that if you want the actual temperature, you're still a lot better off using a probe.

Interesting. I run medical centres. Wonder could I get the docs to read patient temperatures without the patient leaving the waiting room.

Be very careful Barry...it has a class 2 laser pointer. accidentally shinned in an eye would be a serious problem. They make them to read in the ear. Just as fast and more accurate.
