Hi fellas,

I hope to join the ranks of you guys as an owner SOON

Have had few corvettes in past, 2008 when GM offered the employee discount for the first time ever on vettes, I bought a Z06... 2 years now, it has about 4200 miles and sits in the garage as a queen.

I'm a dentist by trade, and now that my practice is really taking off (long story, practicing 20 years now, but started a new one 5 years ago) I can upgrade (in my own mind anyways) my Z06 which I just about have sold now on Ebay.

Spending over $100K is still more than what the wife will let me spend... So no 360/430... that's okay, because I've always had my heart set on a Testarossa...

I found a 1992 512TR with 28,800 miles for $83,000... Red with Tan interior, 30K mi service last summer... if I get my finances in order in a few weeks, and if the car is still available, I'm all over it!

If not, I'm sure another 512TR equal to my liking will emerge

Until my membership allowed me to post, I've been reading A LOT here... already know about the recalls on the 512TR, its little nuances that might present themselve, already talked to Ferrari of Atlanta about future serving... Man am I psyched, the 512TR just has that Pizzaz that says "FAWAWI" as my 3 years would say

Couple questions though... this car is all stock, the only thing I want to do to it (other than drive it) is to put a new exhaust on for more sound... what do you recommend? Tubi, Capristo, Basinni, Larini, other? Secondly, I need a tuner, I'd like to have the car dyno'd and tuned to enhance performance if possible... and lastly, Ferrari of Atlanta is the only local dealer near me... but I've heard that sometimes a Ferrari mechanic may leave a dealership to start his own business and often times the service bill is substantially less.... with a 1992 used car, warranty obviously wouldn't be an issue.

So any other advice?

Glad to be here fellas... hope to contribute here in future

Who are you talking with at FoAtlanta? PM me, if you want to keep it confidential. Bought four Ferraris and sold five through FoA...

On the FerrariMarketLetter of this week there are four 512 TR's for sale. I would definitely check those out too (if not in person than at least in pics) - it always gives you a better perspective if you've seen more than 1.

Welcome to FL. Mark, and an early congrats for your choice. Understandably that you are all hyped up, my only rec. is that you give yourself few months first getting used to your car before you jump right in and invest in costly exhaust system. Other than that, looking forward to your inputs. Good luck. w/ smiles Jimmy

Suggest you PM 03:29 PM ferrmktltr and see if you can get a trial subscription to FerrariMarket Letter.

If you wnat to tune the 512 TR, then Norwood in Texas is your best bet.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys

I don't remember the name of the man I talked to at FOA, he was one of the service technicians... he filled me on costs for basic oil changes and such, told me that the only really expensive service I'd have would be valve adjustments with a major service in about 15K miles, which would put me about the 5-6 year mark as much as I plan on driving...

I don't want the 512TR to necessarily be a garage queen, I'm 45 and want to enjoy it... not a daily driver, but weekends to Atlanta, date night, etc...

The car I'm looking at is at Cat's Exotics...

Oh... one other thing,

The reason I'm looking at the 512TR, is that a Testarossa has always been my dream car since Miami Vice and the video game Outrun (who remembers that?)

I know nobody knows the future, but I'm hoping that the 512TR reaches a collector status some day? More so than say a dime a dozen 360?

There's a couple 360's on ebay right now for high seventies... I'd consider one of those too, IF I could find one in a six speed for the same price range I'm looking at...

And since I mention it, can any of you enlighten me about the F1 paddle shifters? PITA to use? I don't get why Ferrari made so many 360's and 430's with them and so very few 6 speeds?

My Infiniti is an automatic, but you can kick the gear selector over to the left side and manually shift 1-5, but if the revs get high enough it automatically shifts to the next gear for you taking all the fun out of it... if F1 paddle shifters are just the same and simply move the controls to the steering wheel for ergonomics, I'd stick with a 6 speed, but that's just me.

Have you driven a TR yet? I would strongly suggest it. Also, get on Michael Sheehan's Ferrari newsletter.

Per the paddle shifters, I've had four that had them and love the technology. I also really loved my F355 that had a six speed manual - the gated shifter is pure Ferrari!

This thread is already off to a good start, but let me jump in and say Welcome Mark!

I listened to the GM Authority podcast yesterday, and the guys were talking about a 512 TR as if they forgot they were supposed to talk about GM cars. It was great!

Ferrari made so many F1 cars because demand called for it... The new 458 is all F1, not avaialble with 6 speed any longer. Very easy to use and fun to use it also... My 355 has the F1 and I love it

So it sounds like Robbie is sticking with his F1!!!

Welcome Mark.

Don't buy a Ferrari thinking it will be a collector's car. It won't.

Buy it to enjoy it.

Welcome to FL.

Thanks again fellas,

When I say "collector", I'm not really looking to buy it as an investment to cash in one day... to me, "collector" has the "wow factor"... and of course, no disrespect to anyone with a 360, but personally the 512TR has the "wow factor" on the outside, but the 360 has the "wow factor" on the inside...

Also, in terms of future collector status/investment... it was my hope to buy a really cool car like the 512 TR, and give it to my 5 year old son one day as a wedding present (hopefully he'll be about 30 by then and able to take over my dental practice... by then I'll be 70 and I hope I can buy a new latest/greatest Ferrari outright...

Ya know, I showed the 512TR to my dad who chuckled a little bit... "boy you haven't changed a bit all these years..."

My dad has always said I'd outgrow this or that desire... and I have outgrown quite a few ambitions, hey, I'm a dentist now and gave up on being a rock star a long time ago (good thing they didn't have American Idol back when I was a kid)... but owning a Ferrari has always been a life long desire.

If I could pick any any Ferrari current or past to own... it would be the 1984 288 GTO! (C'mon PowerBall!!!!!)

Life's to short... I had a mini-stroke 6 years ago (freak torn artery in my brain), I'm all healed now, doctors said to live life and don't expect another... but it made me realize that I want to enjoy life all along the way within reason instead of one last big hurrah at the end... I could probably save my pennies and buy an Enzo when I retire, but I could be dead in 10 years too... so personally, I'm not "settling", dont take it that way, I'm just spending a little a long the way within my financial reason and will be just as happy.

Looks like it is all given. Go for the TR, Mark. Few years ago, one of my Canadian friend finally got his dream car (a TR), and he is a happy man. w/ smiles Jimmy

Actually the TR has the wow factor on the inside.

When you get the bill for a major service you will sit in that car and say wow what did I do!

That will help you understand why the 360's have the wow factor on the outside!!!

And remember to check the oil! Here's Mrs. Colonel sitting in front of a Testarossa engine coffee table at Ferrari of Atlanta. Its owner forgot the tiny detail of checking his fluid levels and locked the thing up. On the bright side, it is an impressive $50k piece of furniture...

Thanks! She is very much a fan of Ferraris! And for that, and many other things, I am grateful...

Always best when the Boss is a partner and not just a participant.

How's that 430?

Did you check your motor vehicle codes yet?

430 is incredible and the Boss is very happy. Unfortunately, rain and more rain has kept the black car in the garage. I've raised the door once or twice just to crank it, though!

Have not had time to search our MV codes yet. Trying my best to get some work done this afternoon...
