engine numbers??

I'm writing on behalf of my uncle who has found 3 Ferrari Engine in a salvage yard. They haven't come with any documents and he therefore doesn't know what type of engines they are.
Can anyone tell me where you find the engine serial numbers on a Ferrari Engine please??
He is going to rebuild it if possible as a hobby.
Many thanks in advance...

are they v-12s? I can only speak to v-12s before about 1972.

First, on the front/top of the driver's side cam cover, there should be a plate that shows the firing order of the cylinders. At the top of that diagram there will be a 3-digit "tipo" number like 209 or 245.

Next, on the passenger side of the motor, on the top of the block where the bellhousing bolts up to it (at about the 2 o'clock position if you're looking at the rear of the motor) there is a boss where there will be two sets of numbers; the lower set will be a 4 or 5-digit number which is the s/n of the car. Above that number will be two numbers w/ a backslash between them; these are the internal motor numbers.

this is a fantastic find, but I would strenuously urge caution about rebuilding them if he has not messed w/ old Ferrari motors, even if he is a motor guy; and the parts necessary for a good rebuild are astronomical and sometimes hard to find (dependign ont he part).

Post a picture and we will be able to tell you immediately what they are.

as Bryan says, I believe these are about the same for the V8's..have mine out now, and will look again, but for the rally cars can't say. Don't know why they would be much if any different.
