WTB: Euro GTB QV in US

I want to buy an '84-'85 (i.e. galvanized) Euro GTB. I am on the east coast (USA). looking for black, dark blue or grey in excellent condition. Performance mods ok, as long as it looks stock.

Please pm me with any leads.

Thanks,

Lew

It's a good thing you don't have many requirements!!! Finding those colors might be extremely difficult.

You might not be able to find everything you have listed but you could start with www.drautos.com, www.ferrarimarketletter.com, eBay, and a few others.

Not a lot of GTB models.

First, Welcome to FerrariLife, Lew!

You are looking for the rarest of the rare! The entire collection of 308 GTBi QV's (1983/4/5) comprised of only 748 vehicles - most of which were red American versions. Of those 748, I wish I knew how many survived, but only a very few are still around.

Incidentally, although 1984 was the beginning of Ferrari "rustproofing," be aware that the process needed to be kept up and re-done (as per the Ferrari manual), which in most cases it wasn't because it was thought to be lifelong. Now, many 1984-era Fcars exhibit a brown layer that covers some areas and peels off others.

When you find that gem, post pictures!!

Actually, the vast majority of QV GTB's were EURO models not US. There were only about 45 US models made over the 3 year period...most being red so you got that part right.

As a these are 25 years old they are exempt from DOT/EPA so importing a car from Europe will be pretty straight forward (just 2.5% import duty). Suggest you start looking over here. A few sites to check out are:

Here is a list of known US QVs. They weren't very popular in the early 80s due to that dude with the funny mustache and Hawaiian shirts on TV driving a GTS (and I don't mean Wetpet). Some dealers had trouble moving the GTBs when new, therefore weren't lining up to order more. Ironic that they're so sought after now.

Thanks for the list! The black one in Hemmings looked great. It must have sold right away. I called them about 3 weeks ago and it was gone.

The search goes on....

Jason, what a great first post...terrific picture of your car! Disregard the yellow highlight in the chart - that's where my car falls in place.

American demand for the 308 was high due to the top TV show, Magnum, P.I. Because this demand was so high from the American market, more factory-federalized American versions were produced than european versions of the 308, and thanks to the American market, the 308 became the longest running production vehicle in Ferrari history (1975-85).

Ferrari produced an American-federalized 308 from the factory, then shipped it to America specifically for the American market at a total cost of around $60,000. 25 years ago, to bring a more obscure european version 308 over to America to be federalized, cost an additional $8,000 on top of the cargo-containership shipping costs. It was definitely less costly to purchase one of the more numerous (thanks to the popularity of Magnum, P.I. at that time) $60,000 American versions which were already shipped and federalized. Most of the 308's (european and American) were GTS, not GTB because of that popular show's influence, and most wanted an open-top, which makes the GTB rarer and more collectible now - much like going for the paddle shifters in today's market, but 26 years from now, owning a more appreciated stick shift.

Jason,
That is the initial sale date when new and the date the warranty started. I have heard that it sometimes was practice for Ferrari to start the warranty the day the car reached the dealer versus when it was actually delivered to the customer, but I'm not certain that it's true. If so, the warranty start date may not coincide with the actual retail sale date.

I have followed your thread on F Chat. Nice work so far. As you can see from the list, you own a very rare car. Enjoy it and feel free to PM me if you need any help or technical advice. I have owned my US GTB QV for 13 years and perform all the service myself. I know them quite well. I have done some mods to my suspension, upgraded to 360 brakes, and am currently rebuilding my engine in preparation for converting to sequential EFI, coil on plug ignition and supercharger package...all of which I plan to offer as a bolt on kit to customers once it's fully sorted on my car. I wrestled with the idea of buying a 355, but I just love the 308 too much so I decided to modernize it and raise it's performance to 360 levels. Should be a hoot when it's finished in a few months.

Your's looks to be a nice one and getting better in your hands. Have fun with it.
