Ferrari Preparing Hardcore 599 GTO?

After a brief discussion about this ''599 GTO'' on one of the another threads on the site, I came across this article today...

Rumours suggest Ferrari is working on a hardcore version of the 599 GTB Fiorano. Although these whispers have been quiet recently, new information indicates the rumours are in fact true. While the name is obviously unknown at this point, some are already calling the car the 599 GTO in honour of the legendary 250 GTO of the 1960s. Paperwork prepared for pre-orders apparently used the words "Ferrari 599 GTO Limited Edition" in reference to it.

Specifications are said to include the V12 engine making between 500kW (680hp) and 515kW (700hp). Body mass is decreased by around 45kg to 68kg (100 to 150lbs) using components such as carbon fibre. Expect an overall look inspired by the 599 XX Concept of Geneva 2009.

Within the next two months dealers and buyers should be descending on Maranello for a personal presentation to the car. Thereafter comes a public unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show. The first customers will then receive their GTOs around October 2010.

Because this is a limited edition model with only about 500 units rumoured, pricing will be quite steep. Interested buyers would be advised to budget in the region of between 20% and 25% more than a stock 599.

that would be pretty awesome if they resurrected the GTO designation for this car. Has been long enough, seems they do the GTO in 20-year(ish) intervals if this is indeed what is rumored.

GTO = Gran Turismo Omologato = Homologated for racing. Since that is not what this car is for it would be a travesty to call it that.

yes I know what GTO means, friend

As stated, it would be cool to resurrect the name in a new car, factory raced or not.

This will be a nice step for Ferrari, seeing as they had many variations of the 575 it would be nice to offer this along with the new 599 HGTE

I want to Race.

From Autoblog...
"Supposedly leaked pre-order sheets reportedly refer to a "599 GTO Limited Edition", named in deference to the iconic 250 GTO (to say nothing of the ground-pounding 288 GTO). Based on the 599 GTB Fiorano, the GTO could be Maranello's answer to arch-rival Lamborghini's Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce.

Incorporating design cues and technologies from the 599XX program, the 599 GTO could benefit from a weight-reduction program to cut some 100-150 pound off the curb weight thanks to the extensive use of carbon fiber, while squeezing out as much as 700 horsepower from the Enzo-derived 6.0-liter V12. Pricing would be expected to jump by as much as a quarter to nearly $400,000, and if the reports prove accurate, the 599 GTO could be ready for debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March with the first of just 500 examples slated for delivery by this time next year."
