328 GTS Purchase

Hi,

I'm looking at a 1989 328 GTS with 22,053 miles, red-on-tan with fresh belt service. Appreciate any opinions on this mileage level. Also, can anyone recommend a good shop for a PPI in the Chicago area?
Thanks, rmc

Welcome to FL!

Sorry just saw your post and I'm surprised nobody commented yet. But anyway you might try Continental Autosports for the PPI, or Fox Valley Motorcars ask for Tony he was a straight up guy with me when I was going to purchase a lotus from him a couple years back.

Good Luck with the purchase and let us know if you buy it. Post some pics!

Cheers!

And hi to you sir,

Great decision to look at a 328, you'll love it! I got one earlier this year and I'm completely hooked. Any chance of getting a Euro-spec, or does your location in the US prohibit those?

As to the famous mileage dilemma: 22,053 miles sounds like a pretty good number for an '89 car. It's definitely not ridiculously high and a far cry from serious wear or a rebuild under normal circumstances. And it's certainly not extremely low. But in my opinion one should distrust very low anyhow. For one, (ultra-low)mileage may just have been tampered with (apparently it's not too difficult on a 328).

More importantly, Ferrari's should run up a bit of mileage year on year. These cars need to be ran, just to keep everything lubed and current. On a 20 year old car, 1-2k miles per annum - so 20 to 40k miles in total - isn't a bad thing at all. Your's - or at least the one you're looking at - is at the lower end of this range.

CAVEAT: the above holds, assuming the previous owner(s) drove it properly, i.e. warmed it up diligently and such, and - especially - had it stored, maintained and serviced properly! But your PPI-guy (sorry, not too familiar with the area, no suggestions on that front) will likely be able to give you a fair view on the state of wear and maintenance .

Best of luck, hope you'll let us know the conclusion of your deliberations...

A horse is a horse, of course, of course, and no one can talk to a horse of course. That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mister F.
