SEFAC Kyalami Day 2009

Hi All

I haven't posted for a while (even though I check in every day!) - been a bit hectic.

Saturday was the annual Kyalami SEFAC day. It was a pretty good turnout - about 150 cars.

My 308 didn't go too well unfortunately - the tyres are very old and way too hard - in the cold weather absolutely no grip at all. Also, I think I need to work on my steering rack - maybe upgrade to a quicker one - the steering is feeling a little dead.

I met up with Mike430 - he should have some pics.

For others, check out

http://shots.co.za/shop/browse_event...DAY%2018%20JUL

I got to go in my friend's F40. First off, I am a very bad passenger - I get car sick!!! We did 8 laps and overtook about 8 cars (including several 360 Challenge cars and another F40). I felt really queazy after the ride but wow - what a ride. The owner was really pushng it - it is without a doubt my favorite car.

My other friend was instructing on the day and he drove a guy's Scuderia for a few laps. He marvelled over its ability but was iffy on the brakes and the ABS settings. As he has now driven the Scud and the F40 in anger, his verdict was quite interesting. He said the beauty of the F40 is that you will never have a perfect lap in it - it will always challenge you whilst the Scud is so good and complete that it is really easy to get up to speed and consistent in it. Overall his view is that the F40 would be his choice every time. Nice perspective.

Overall it was a very cool day!!!

Take care

Mike

Looks like a nice sunny day-a classic highveld Winter's day perfect for playing on the track. Very interesting take on F40 versus 430 Scuderia-probably the 430 Scuderia would be quicker around Kyalami than the F40 despite the 17% loss of power for the normally aspirated 430 compared to the turbo'ed F40. The straights just are not long enough for the F40! In expert hands, sounds like the F40 is more fun to drive.

Many happy memories of playing at Kyalami in Dino 246gt; 365 gt 2+2 and 512 BB (both mine, rhd, and my father's, lhd). Not to mention driving many Porsches and a Countach LOP5000S. Lovely track, lots of happy memories.

.
+1, short straights and the electronics will give the Scud the edge, however thrill of the ride goes to the F40 driver.

The weather was perfect - cool but very sunny. The track was typical highveld winter though - very dusty.

Interestingly for those who know Kyalami, the FIA mandated for the Superbikes that the painfully slow chicane just before the main straight be taken away and replaced with essentially the same pre-93 corner. It is now very hairy - a fast right-hander that has a completely blind exit and is off camber to add to it!

Pretty scary I must say!

It sounds like a very tight challenging track to drive. How long is the circuit?

It's a proper GP track - 4.2km long and around 1:15 for a F1 car. It has significant elevation changes and is a proper driver's circuit. It call for big nuts to drive it properly.

Nice! The track was much better before that chicane-I remember that chicane added at least 2-3 seconds per lap. A wonderful driving circuit with slow bends, fast bends and some nice straights, not to mention the elavation changes Schumacher mentioned. Although a pale shadow of the real Kyalami circuit where I went to watch sportscars and F1 since 1976-I would loved to have driven the original Kyalami.

Hi all,

Yeah like Mike (Schumacher) said, it was a great turnout and a fantastic day. Thanks to Mike, I had the great opportunity and experience of going in a F40, as he organised a ride for me with his mate to take me for a few laps around the track. It was absolutely brilliant - a ride I will never forget. It was also my first time around Kyalami believe it or not, and what a way to experience the track for the first time than in a F40. Thanks again Mike!!

Well here are some photos from the day. Unfortunately quality isn't that good as the pics were not taken with a digital still camera but a mixture of cellphone and video camera that can take photos.

The first three photos are of Mike and his 308GTS.

Here is an aerial view of Kyalami Race Track. Unfortunately Google Earth isn't updated to the lastest images. The other two pictures show the slow chicane at turn 13 that Mike was talking about, that has now been changed to a fast single corner turn before entering the final turn, turn 14 that leads you onto the main straight. Unfortunately with the 2D images you dont get the full aspect of the track, as it does consist of inclines and declines.

It is a very tough track.

Just to give you an idea of the elevation changes, in the first pic of the track on the left hand side there is a drop in elevation of 10 metres into the "esses" followed by a climb of 33m elevation up to "Wesbank" followed by a drop in elevation down the "mineshaft" of 40m (I checked these on Google Earth).

The track is anti-clockwise.

Sounds very "Spa" like. Wonderful!
