Replacing Brakes

I'm just a bit curious. I have to replace my brakes because the car shudders while braking and the the brake pedal can be depressed very far along with terrible stopping distance. In other words, I need to think about replacement. Since my Cobalt is front disk and rear drum I only need to do the front. I was wondering if it would be stupid to take to a shop to have the rotors turned and the pads replaced rather than ordering the rotors online and pads online. That is the way I am leaning and I wanted to get your opinion on brake pad brands, because I don't want to go OEM. My car has 19,500 miles and the pads are about gone. (no squeaking yet) I haven't looked at the rotors yet, just speculating the possibility of replacing them.

Chris only if your car has a definite shudder would I change or turn your rotors if not then just do the pads they are uber easy to do with a little knowledge.

If they do shudder quite a bit then have them turned it is way cheaper than new ones and they only remove 1 to 2mm.

Well Chris,
I looked it up on autopartswarehouse.com (a company I have used before and been happy with) and you can get a set of rotors for the front of your car for $36 each. Some high quality pads were $84. So you should be able to change out the front brakes for around $150 and have the job done by yourself in an afternoon. Save the old rotors so you can have them machined the next time you need front brakes.

The low pedal is the drum brakes. They need adjusting. lift both rear wheels off the ground, give the emergency brake 3 clicks and tighten the rear brakes until you can't turn the tire by hand. All set.

Every time I've had rotors turned I've been disappointed. They warp due to heat cycling. Removing metal increases the cycling and they RE warp even faster. I decided many years ago that I will replace rotors rather than turn them. At 36 bucks it probably cheaper anyway.

Sounds good. I will most likely just replace the rotors and pads. Would you go ceramic pads? I did on my Firebird back when I changed those brakes. Thanks a lot. Thanks about the drum brakes Pete.

Rotors can warp when hot and then subject to immediate temp changes such as the winter conditions you have there.

So you can have the originals checked for turning but you may find they are warped.

If not warped you may be able to have them turned.

Smart car has tiny discs in front and shoe brakes on the rear.

Brabus is already selling upgrade kits for the Smart.

Full deal with the car is $26,000.00!

I don't think so!

Yea, Michigan has terrible weather and is terrible on cars. Near Detroit on side streets off the main highway is the problem with puddles. I noticed that today the shaking isn't as bad anymore. I know the pads need changing though.

Most cars don't have drums anymore. Unfortunately, mine does.

Make sure to get the rotors checked and turned or you'll be wasting $ on pads.
