.........a day that will live in infamy.
It was a bright sunny December Sunday in New Rochelle and for the first time in our lives my mom and dad were going to let my younger brother and me 'go to the movies' by ourselves. They drove us to the Larchmont Cinema where we watched 'A Yank in the RAF' starring Tyrone Power and Betty Grable, she of the distressingly beautiful gams. We watched a newsreel film that reported that two Japanese diplomats Nomura and Kurusu had met with U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull to try to 'settle differences' between Japan and the United States. Then we emerged from the cinema to meet our folks who were waiting in the family Buick. Dad tells us that 'we are at war with Japan!' WHAT? we ask. 'A Japanese fleet with warplanes has carried out a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor' he says. 'Where's that?' we ask and that is how Jonny and I learned about the start of our engagement in World War II. This evening Judith and I will raise a glass to the memory of all those who served, suffered and perished that day and in the years of war that followed.
