Rudi Uhlenhaut's 300SLR 'coupe'

Taz will like this from Sports Car Digest Weekly's coverage of Kuwait Concours d'Elegance; a 1954 Formula 1 Mercedes-Benz for the road. But for the narrow tires in appearance it could almost be a 2014 model. Straight-eight 3-liter engine w/ desmodromic valve actuation, Hirth roller-bearing crankshaft, inboard-mounted (drum) brakes, most advanced specification imaginable. I want one

what do I know? I drive blue Ferraris

Seth- That one would definitely be on my top three list. Beautiful and blisteringly fast. That engine was a real wonder.

Beauty.

I remember Simon Kidston somewhere recently said that this is THE most desirable car of all. Even from competition like 250 GTO and Bugatti Type 57 SCAtlantique...if this car ever goes to market, it would fetch kazillion euros, USD, pounds, whatever.

John, I had recollected that Mercedes had built two of these; checked with the bible, Wikipedia, and found this:

"Two of the nine 300 SLR rolling chassis produced were converted into 300 SLR/300 SL hybrids. Effectively road legal racers, they had coupé styling, gull-wing doors, and a footprint midway between the two models.

"When Mercedes canceled its racing program after the Le Mans disaster the hybrid project was shelved. Company design chief Rudolf Uhlenhaut, architect of both the 300 SLR racer and the hybrids, appropriating one of the leftover mules as his personal driver. Capable of approaching 290 km/h (180 mph), the Uhlenhaut Coupé was far and away the fastest road car in the world in its day."

Thus, there is one for each of us, John! Sorry Fabio.

I stand corrected and bow to your superior knowledge, sir!

I shall start saving. May take a while . . .

Fabio, do you want to go halves?
