No news from Crimea
This thread seemed to have gone surprisingly quiet in the last few days - no update e-mails - so I wondered what had happened to it. It appears to have been removed to somewhere inaccessible (maybe closed? that would seem rather ironic in view of the heated discussion around censorship / closing threads on Fchat).
Can anyone tell me what has happened to it?
Ed moved the thread to a politics section. This is apparently where the thread was meant to be posted in the first place. I don't know where this section is and quite frankly I don't want to know either.
That thread is a testament that everything we say online is permanent and has consequences. Don't they say it's best not to discuss religion and politics? Opinions lead way to debate, debate to argument, argument to insults. This thread is now probably court evidence. One member feels that he has been defamed and another will possibly spend a lot of money on lawyers defending his actions.
I realise that free speech is important but ultimately the courts have to decide if defamation has occurred, not the members of this forum.
I think that discussing these sensitive topics on this forum is likely to end this way in the future. I personally I witnessed the deterioration of this relationship. It was a train wreck. I tried unsuccessfully to help a member see that it is unwise to provoke a person who has the means to defend himself, only to feel offended myself.
My possible solution to minimising future problems is to only permit these topics in a 'private section' that is hidden from the 'daily feed'. That way members can strongly debate in private, away from a publicly searchable forum.
Just my 2c,
