The new Lambo

As I was out driving, I stopped by my local Lamborghinidealership. They had one of their new 12cylinder cars. Since I had not seen one before, I looked at it very carefully. The manager came up to me. I told him I had purchased my 550 in the building before Ferrari moved to PCH.

Anyway, he told me how wonderful the Lambo was. I said it appears there is a large blind spotlike the Lambo Diablo SV I had test driven years ago. He said the same thing the salesman said who tried to sell me the SV. “Oh, do not worry. The car has so much acceleration you do not need to worry about the blind spot.”

This attitude is why Lambos do not really race.

Also, looking at it from the front, it resembles a cat and I do not like cats.

First rule of driving in Southern California freeways is to go quickly.

Total nonsense. A large blind spot is dangerous and annoying. When? At slow speeds. On the freeway, in a traffic jam, you can't see if there are any bikers moving between cars so changing lanes is very stressful. When you are on an on-ramp, it can be a big hindrance in seeing whether you can filter in. There are many crossroads here in Europe which are not 90 degrees, but 45 degrees. That makes it difficult to see whether there is any traffic coming. And if you take your LHD car over to a RHD country, or the other way around, the problem is compounded.

There is a reasonable blind spot in the 458, and about every 2000km or so, I have a situation where I just can't see. It is unsettling.

So - we love rear-engined cars. But to stick your head in the sand and say we can ignore their faults is dumb.

Well said. One of the big positives of the 550 for me is the excellent all-round visibility. Ditto my 911. Being able to see what is going on around you, makes driving far more pleasurable. Especially important when, like me, you only have one eye that works. One of the most useful gizmos on my Merc daily driver flashes a red light in my door mirror if it detects something in my blind spot and if I then indicate to pull out despite this, it sounds a warning. As I drive in the UK, so RHD, and it is my right eye that doesn't function, this is a great help when pulling out of junctions and changing lanes to overtake.

Best wishes, John
