Winter Drivers/Tyres, Anyone?
Winter is coming and I need to check again on your winter driving habits!
Even though we get 300 days of sunshine in Southern Switzerland we do get a proper alpine winter with snow, salt and the lot. I see the winter tyres on exposition at Kessel's for the FFs and for the Cali:s mainly and it makes me curious of who of you have a set of winter tyres for your finer cars? - And who of you heroes actually put the winter tyres on and drive in true winter condition?
I've only been exposed to surprise snow in the Ferraris on summer tyres but I haven't been bold enough as to go all the way and buy snow tyres and chains. It's been on my mind for the Scaglietti but I chickened out...
I intentionally took the Corniche for a winter tour up to Engadina on my all weather Continentals but had to turn around since snow chains were needed for the Maloja Pass and I had none. The all weather capabilities that some tyre manufacturers claim are nonexistent anyway. Now that the soft top has been restored on the Corniche and a new paint has been sprayed on I also opted for a Tectyl underbelly job which encapsulates and protects during harsh winter use. Next is to get snow tyres and chains and occasionally go on winter excursions. The Phantom V is definitely getting the same treatment plus full underbelly protection armour.
The only Ferrari I will intentionally use for winter condition is the 308 Vetroresina. It will be on rally snow tyres, perhaps studded.
What's your take on winter driving your finer cars?
The bad news: Time flies
The good news: I'm the pilot
