Festival of Speed - Zwartkops

Hi All

On Saturday I went past Zwartkops race circuit near Pretoria. My neighbour has a Benetton B192 (Ex-Schmacher/Patrese) that he was running with Jan Lammers in the cockpit.

There was a Ferrari 641 (ex-Alesi) there as well and I was fortunate to see both these cars run.

The ferrari sounded phenomenal but the Benetton was really hooked up and ran a new circuit record in the afternoon.

I saw Mike430 there as well - I'm sure he can give some more pics.

The black car with me in it is a Formula Renault that was run by another guy I know.

All in all a great day followed by a spectacular Red Hot Chili Peppers concert on Saturday night!!!

Warm regards

Mike

Fantastic Mike!

Nice to see Jan Lammers was in the cockpit, lovely guy and one of Holland's best racing sons I think. I saw him at the Mille Miglia in 2011.

I love these "old" F1 cars. The 641 is a stunning looking machine.

Sounds like a great day in the sun, Mike, and a mega concert that evening! What did you drive to the track in? Absent of traffic, the back roads to Zwartkops can be a thrill. Be it the V12 growl of the Diablo or the turbo whoosh of the 930 or the open top feelgood factor of the 308!

Hey Dave and Onno

I'm embarassed to say that we went there in my friend's Pajero!!! We were on our way to fetch his '68 Firebird but ran out of time. The Diablo is off the road at the moment with the handbrake issue but should be done by Friday.

Jan drove the car last year and ran a 58.00. On Saturday he ran a 54.40 with a 12,000 rev limit. He was supposeedly hitting the limiter down the back section. The feeling is that there is a low 50 still in that car.

My neighbour has only done a handful of laps in the Benetton himself. He is busy building a cool house in Camps Bay Cape Town with a big basement garage so unfortunately the Benetton will be going to live down there.

Great stuff. I rather think the F1 Ferrari is a 643 not a 641 though.

If I am not mistaken, pajero has some sort of connotation in Spanish slang? Red faces all round at Mitsubishi or bewilderment why sales were so poor in Spanish-speaking countries. Either way, a sunny Saturday on the way to the races with gorgeous 308 and 930 both sitting at home, the shame!

Would have been great to have been there with you to see those F1 monsters eating up the tricky Zwartkops. I will never forget our dices, you in '68 911S and me in '69 911E, around the old, scary Zwartkops back in the days. If I remember correctly 0.2 seconds separated us on each of our timed runs!

That sounds like fun, Dave & Mike! Dicing in a couple of Porsches... Never been to Swartkops myself.

You are proably right - It looks like a Tamiya RC car I have of the 641 - so assumed it to be that one. The V12 sounded melodic and beautiful

Dave, that dice was epic - you came out on top that day - ended up beting me in the championship as a result!!!

The old Zwartkops circuit was a treat and despite being short was pretty scary - that day, every lap I went through the "drive-inn"sweep faster than the one before.

The current Zwartkops circuit is a treat with the pits being open to fans (as is the pit wall!!!). The historic revivals have become very cool events with a nice array of cars to see and hear

That drive-in sweep separated the men from the boys. I did my one and only proper race there in a Vodacom Sports 2000 with slicks. The fast guys were taking the drive-in sweep flat in fourth. Until I was told this, I was changing down to third and feathering it through there. After this information I took it in fourth but lifted and each time had to force myself not to hit the brakes. That's when I grew up and realised I was a boy. Racing would remain a hobby.

New Zwartkops very hard on the brakes. Had brake fade in my 911 which had never happened to me on any other track. Kyalami still my favourite!
