New Daily Driver

Time to replace my A3. I've loved every minute of ownership and have logged more than 350,000 on two A3's. I'm getting older. my back is getting more tired, and now I have to drive into NYC 3 or more times a month (roads SUCK). Need to find something inexpensive (price and maintenance), reasonable fuel economy, reasonable performance, and a bit soft.

Anyone have experience with the Cadillac CTS? I'm looking at a 2010 with the 3.6L and the "performance" package and AWD.

No, but I applaud your selection...however, I hear trading in even an old A3 for an R8 is, like, ok.

Lane- How about an S7? More room and more oomph.

Love the S7. Don't like the maintenance and repair costs. Biggest problem with Audi is their desire to use nonstandard parts (including fasteners) requireing you to refresh your tool box for stuff as simple as oil changes or brake shoes. The specialty tools "motivate" you to just use their shop. They charge $120 and hour for everything including oil changes. They wanted to bill me 360 in labor and 200 in parts for brake pads. Bought the pads for $50 and had Monroe drop them in for $100. I love Audi but seriously....

Center drilled 12 square bits needed for brake shoe's, custom cartridge drain adapter and 36 mm socket needed for oil changes.

Pulled the trigger on the Caddy today. Hope it doesn't suck.

Lane- You will love the Cadillac and, like most American cars, service costs virtually nothing. The hot rod V6 is a very nice engine that would have worked well in a Dino type car. Not going to happen, though.

S7 is too bloody expensive, at any rate.

I've got a 2010 CTS-V sedan. What a wonderful car! I've got about 19k on it and it's never been back to the dealer for any issues. The only money I've put into it has been for oil changes. Acceleration, handling and comfort have been outstanding. I know you're not considering a V but you will not be disappointed with the CTS.

Audi's offer was $5500 on my A3 and charge $29,000 for a similarly appointed 2009 A4 (premium plus package in both cars). GM gave me $9750 on the A3 and $30,000 for the 2010 CTS...it became a no brainer. CTS came with a GM bumper to bumper till 100,000 miles.

Congratulations, Lane !!! I think you made the right decision there.

People I know in LA absolutely swear by this car. I am sure you would enjoy it as much.

My family has been a Cadillac one for the last 30 years. I took my parents hand-me-down last year: A great car. They have a CTS now and it's a very nice road car. You'll enjoy yours I'm sure.
