Earthquakes in Emilia-Romagna

Following the earthquakes of one week ago, 6.0 richter, today a wave of tremors has striken the same area around Modena: from 9.00 CET to now (14.00 CET), there have been at least 6 tremors between 5.0 and 5.8 richter. A lot of damage and 10-11 dead. Even Mantova has suffered damages and a few wounded

I am sitting in my office in Milano, 4th floor, and I am feeling very well each tremor even here.

Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Ducati and Magneti Marelli have been prudentially evacuated, although no damages have been reported so far.

ciao
Mauro

Thanks JayG! No problem here in Milano or in Bergamo, where I live.

It seems the tremors are due to a new fracture in the fault below the area between Modena, Ferrara and Bologna. That area was not considered particularly risky from a seismic point of view, until now. The last earthquake of this magnitude was several centuries ago.

Mantova, the city of Tazio Nuvolari, was damaged by a tremor a couple of hours ago: close to the Palazzo Ducale, the basilica of Santa Barbara's dome collapsed and damages are reported to the famous Palazzo Tè too. Even in the province, damages are reported to private houses and churches.

More tremors are expected in the next weeks.

ciao
Mauro

Dead are now 15, with several missing, and 5000 evacuated people (who will bring the total, including the ones from the earthquakes of one week ago, to 12000).

Minor damages signalled in other cities too, like Milano (three high schools and a few buildings) and Padova (San Antonio's basilica).

ciao
Mauro

Mauro- Glad you are ok. Unfortunately took out a lot of irreplaceable buildings and way too many people.

Many thanks Taz and Nathan. I hope everybody will now be more prepared to the next quakes, which will certainly arrive in the next days/weeks and will be of similar magnitude.
Ciao
Mauro

Hi Mauro,

Thanks for this report. I just saw the reportage on TV and it looks really serious. Lots of damage in the villages of the Modena province. More severe aftershocks are expected in this area. All my thoughs to you, nice Italian people!

glad you are ok. Really not a good sight to see such ancient blgs that have survived for many centuries now needing extensive rebuild or ????? Hopefully, they will be rebuilt even in these austere times.

Hi Stef and Rik, Thank you. I don't know, I am not too optimistic about restoring what can be saved and rebuilding what was lost. L'Aquila is still a ghost city after years since the quake. The only hope is the quality of the people living there. It is not by chance that some of the most known brands of bikes and cars in the world are rooted there. The area of the quake is one of most developed in bio-medical in the world too. Those people can do anything, if the State will not jump in with its political circus and the corruption surrounding it.

Ciao
Mauro

Thanks Barry! I hope the worst is over there too, although it is highly probable new tremors will have similar magnitude in the next weeks. Some experts say the tremors could go on for years before another period of quiet.

Ciao
Mauro
