As I type this, we're bobbing on 13 ft seas.
Haze gray and underway as the saying goes,
keeping the north Pacific safe and sound.
To mark Memorial Day, reveille will sound one hour later (0600) so the crew can sleep in.
There will be a burial at sea and a wreath laying in the morning,
followed by a holiday routine to give the crew a rest.
The officers close the mess so even the cooks have a few hours off.
In the afternoon, we'll do an airshow for the crew,
so the guys that toil below-decks can see what all their hard work goes toward.
For dinner, we’ll get double rations - both hamburgers AND hot dogs.
And for dessert, they're going to break out the good stuff;
all THREE flavors of ice cream.
After evening chow, all are invited to assemble in the hanger bay.
The Chaplain will say a few words, and the Captain will address the crew.
Then up on the big screen (one of the hanger bay doors)
they’ll show the John Wayne classic IN HARMS WAY.
To all my brethren and "formers", I'll hoist a glass of "Bug Juice" for you.
And one for all you poor civilian landlubbers too.
To be honest, I can't think of a better way to honor the day.
Of all the narcissists I know, I love me the most.
