Only trouble is they do not work too well in deep snow (ask me how I know) or mud. Plus they are $400 each, kind of like Ferrari tires. Great on the highway with three position settings for the shocks.

The Austrian sourced G550 is quite a vehicle now and there is an AMG version. It now has the new drivetrain with the 7 speed automatic and the S class engine or AMG 6.2 liter. Better off-road than my GL, but will not carry as many cases of beer or as much fly fishing gear.

2012 will probably bring the twin turbo 4.5 liter that is in the new S class for both cars.

Would be great if your daughter joined. I have only seen Jo with the 458 here and she is not on too often.

I need to go look and drive the G55 and the GL - S class engine in my son's car just hit 100k and it's been perfect.

My daughter took the Ferrari out yesterday - heard the engine roaring must have hit 60 in the subdivision. It's just a matter of time before she signs up.

I don't need much space - my favorite option is the real wheel placed behind the rear window - only saw one with that option.

The Turbo is a lot of car and it's wider appearance to me isn't ugly at al.

The basic Cayenne is a mess - IMO

New Cayenne's have the Pan Am looking interior - very well done.

I was thinking that a wind would come along - skies didn't seem blue enough to pull that crap off.

I have seen them dropped by helicopter never craned especially over a structure - complete morons!

If the sun comes out today, might try to get all the cars lined up for a few new group photos.

Be great to see that!

We are having just the opposite here - rain and clouds missed a run this morning due to weather.

I own a G55 and a G400. The G55 is a hot rod. The engine growl just puts a smile on my face every time. I've owned G:s for ten years now and they are kind of addictive. Looking forward to hearing your impressions from the test drive.

I loved the engine - performance sound - reminded me of my CL65 believe it or not.

At 6 2 it was hard to get comfortable which is unusual and the salesman fiddled with the seat but it still was uncomfortable - not sure why

Schwartzenegger is also a big boy and he seems to enjoy his G55 so I hope the seating issue can be sorted for you. Good luck!

I seriously looked at a G about four years ago, but they still had the old drivetrain, so I bought a GL 550. Naturally, about a year or so later the G also came out with the S drivetrain and they are way better offroad than my GL, which I actually need for my fly-fishing trips. But the GL is way better on the highway, has way more room, and the wife loves it, so....

Capo and Terry

I think the G55 is discontinued on 2012 - the only option is a G550

Funny as I prefer discontinued cars

Doug- Could be. Once the G550 was introduced with the S class drivetrain, there was no reason for the AMG G55 and its outdated engine and five speed automatic. There will probably be an AMG version later.

Rumor is they will make a limited version - of a limited version in 2013.

There are a few 2011's out there - wonder how those cars value will hold given a new model that may also have a LWB.

With the new drive train and old engine is it worth buying or waiting?

I got killed on a CL65 went from 200k to 80k in 3 years

Doug- At one point there was a guy living in Santa Fe who made a good living importing and federalizing the G and charging $100K+. Mercedes put him out of business. Have not been checking how they are holding their value, but this year the local Mercedes dealership sent us a cash offer of $62K for Jan's 3 1/2 year old GL550, which really surprised me. The G is way rarer than the GL. The G is way better off-road with locking diffs, etc, but actually is kind of small inside. About the same size as our old Grand Cherokees, which unfortunately were very unreliable. The GL can carry a lot more stuff for extended fly fishing trips. They have an off-road packege for the GL 450, but not the GL 550, but it sill works as long as you stay away from deep snow.

I tried to find some more aggressive tires for it, but they are 21" and only Continental and Pirelli make tires that fit. Who would ever have thought of Z rated M&S tires, but that is what they are. As bad as Ferrari tires, too, at $375-475 each. That would put a whole set of tires on the Jeeps.

We need a 100k gig like that - wow!

That deep snow thing - need to hear that story some time

Seems like Mercedes is toning down their gas guzzlers - think it's the tip of the iceberg.

All my favorite cars are discontinued.

When Ferrari first introduced the Classiche Program I was down at the factory shortly after. The guy who headed it at the time was going on about how they could remanufacturer any part for every car Maranello had ever built.

...........which immediately led me to asking if I could order all the parts needed to construct a new 250 GTO.
