Just Stunning: Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale

This is just stunning. Has to be one of the best looking cars ever made.

Kidston - 1968 Alfa Romeo <em>Tipo</em> 33 Stradale#

1968 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale

Chassis no. 750330104

  • Regularly voted the best looking motor car in history
  • One of less than ten known to exist
  • Exotic, race bred specification
  • Firmly in the top tier of the car collecting world
Hidden in the trailer is one of the sexiest front profiles ever. Elegantly formed wings are filled with teardrop headlight cowls, the chrome applied like a Vogue cover girl’s eyeliner. The delicate Alfa shield sits proudly on an aggressive, narrow grille. Rarely are power and beauty melded so masterfully.” Mick Walsh, Classic & Sportscar magazine, January 1999, in a rare feature on the Tipo 33 Stradale.

In those days there was no speed limit in Italy and the police only stopped you out of curiosity. More often they would gesture you on: “Avanti, Avanti.” Once, on the autostrada to Venice, I ran it for 4km at its 10,000rpm rev limit in sixth. I clocked it at 180mph. Amazingly, below 150mph there was little engine noise, but past 160 it became really intense inside. The car was fantastically stable- even in crosswinds it still ran brilliantly straight.” Henry Wessells II, American motoring connoisseur and first private owner of a Stradale.

Chassis ‘0104’ spent its early years in Italy where it was registered ‘VI 500033’, remaining there until sold in 1984 by collector Pietro Brigato to Kiyoshi Takihana in Japan. It returned to Europe in the late 1980s and entered the ownership of pioneering collector, and Nurburgring Oldtimer Grand Prix founder, Count Hubertus von Donhoff, who recalls that another Japanese collector arrived in the middle of winter determined to buy it, the previous Japanese owner having refused to sell to him.

From 1990 until 2004 the car remained in Japan until acquired by a leading American collector who immediately commissioned a comprehensive restoration, rewarded by Best in Class at Pebble Beach. Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradales are rare, exotic and elusive even in the uppermost echelons of the classic car world. The opportunity to acquire one, particularly in this condition, is rarer still.

How so true. Stupid me, when I first got hooked with classic cars, I stumbled across a pic of this car and fell in love. Asked around and was told of the price tag (at the time, several mil ? Something like that). Out went my love and replaced by reality. If I am not wrong, long time ago, Michael Sheehan sold one ? Beautiful car, indeed. Considering the size and lightness, must be out of this world with driving pleasure too. w/ smiles Jimmy

Was with Ed at the Alfa meet when he took these pictures. Agree that in person the car is absolutely stunning. I may be wrong but I think this particular version was bodied by Scaglione. Believe there is a Zagato version also.

In any event they are few and far between and obviously command a chunk of money to acquire.

Best regards,

Robert

That's right, there was some question about the body and i can"t remember if we figured it out.

Ed do you have a front shot which shows whether the one we saw was a four or two headlight version?

Note also in the pics above that there are at least three different versions of rear view mirror placement. I like the clean look at Pebble best.

Best regards,

Robert

Not many at all. I may be mistaken but I think it is only 5-6.

Not sure I agree, I normally just wear a T-shirt and jeans when I go out driving. No reason to look like an ad for Loro Piana when you get out of a Ferrari. Personally prefer the low key look.

Sorry for hijacking the thread. I was half joking regarding his attire. I do agree with you, Boxer, that there's no need for excess, and low key, relaxed look is the way to go. But then, if I may be a stickler a bit, his dress code is not what I would like to wear, especially presenting such a gorgeous car to the public. Would you go out to a date dressed as such ? w/ smiles Jimmy

Well, the white socks and sneakers definitely have to go.
