dow 7 dichromate conversion coating

Having trouble finding some local shops to perform this on the Mg valve covers and misc cover plates and so on for a 71 Dino GT im restoring. Not interested in shipping them blindly to another country. Anyone provide me with a picture of the finished product so I can get a clear idea of what the proper color is for these valve covers? I may have to duplicate the color in paint ( I can hear the moaning now lol) It has several Mg engine parts, seems to have carry over 206 parts on it. I believe the proper color is a muddy black / green color.

Thanks.

Does anyone have pictures of an early 246 engine? A 206 will also do. Period pics are good too. Looking for an engine with dark magnesium valve covers not the natural aluminum.

Thanks!

Dear Paul,

Several years ago I had done some research to determine the best way to protect the magnesium parts of the little blue car and came up with the following. It may or may not be current but perhaps it will be useful to you.

Please see the following URL:

A Brite Company - Metal Finishing Supplies & Service

SurTec 650 chromitAL TCP
A chemical process that produces a highly corrosion resistant trivalent chromate conversion coating on aluminum and aluminum alloys. It can be applied by brush, spray or immersion. The color of the coating can be varied from faint blue to tan and iridescent. It also makes an excellent base for organic coatings (paint & powder coat).
chromitAL TCP is a drop in replacement for conventional hex-chrome coatings and matches or exceeds the properties of hex-chrome solutions.

SurTec 650 chromitAL TCP is approved under Spec. MIL-DTL-81706, the Qualified Products List for Spec. MIL-C-5541 Type II, Class A&B, Form II, Method A & C. (336 hrs min. to NSS per ASTM B-117).

The hexavalent chromate is the deadly stuff that this Trivalent product replaces. Another company also has license from the Navy to produce a similar product, minimum order is as follows:
5 lbs. Luster-On Aluminescent - $ 100.00 / lb.
Shipment – Springfield, MA

and the description is at:
Luster-On Products, Inc.

Best regards,

Robert
